COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Head Coach Julie Wright and Senior Shortstop Lindsey Schmeiser kicked off the 2016 season at softball media day on Friday at the Xfinity Center.
Julie Wright is beginning her first year at the helm of the Maryland softball program. Wright comes from Idaho State where she led the Bengals to three straight Big Sky Championships (2013-2015).
“What you're going to see from the team this year is a new identity,” said Wright. “This team this year has a great responsibility in that to leave a legacy for all the other teams that come through our program. It's exciting to watch them go through that process.”
Lindsey Schmeiser enters the 2016 season as one of the most decorated hitters in Maryland softball history. Heading into her senior season, Schmeiser has the highest career batting average in program history, batting at a .362 clip. Last year, Schmeiser was named First Team All-Big Ten with a .369 batting average. The Dunkirk, Md. native set a school record for doubles in a season with 21.
“The coaching staff has been incredible,” said Schmeiser. “Between the three of them, they're all different personalities. It brings a great balance.”
The Terrapins begin their 2016 campaign February 12 against Boston College at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Maryland will spend their first 24 games on the road against the nations top teams.
“Our schedule is insane, I like it that way,” said Wright. “We will play our style of softball and not worry about who's in the other dugout. Everyone of our nonconference games is going to prepare us for Big Ten play.”
After spending the first month of the season on the road, the Terrapins will return home for the Maryland Invitational on March 18.
