storylines
• Melo Trimble and Jake Layman led four players in double figures with 18 points each in Maryland's 81-55 win over Illinois on Thursday. The Terps connected on a season-high 14 three-pointers on the day, including four from sophomore Jared Nickens. Nickens has seven treys in his last two games. The 55-point output for Illinois matched a season-low for opponents vs. the Terps this season (Saint Francis (12/4).
• The Terps have been ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for 33 straight weeks and the USA Today Top 25 for 34.
• Thursday's game against Illinois marked the home finale for the Terps this season. Maryland is 34-2 in College Park over the past two seasons, including a 16-1 mark in 2015-16. The Terps are fifth nationally and first in the Big Ten Conference in average attendance this season (17,863 per game).
• Sophomore guard Melo Trimble is two points away from 1,000 career points at Maryland. The Big Ten Preseason Player of the Year has 156 assists this season, 50 more than he distributed as a rookie in 2014-15. The Upper Marlboro, Md., native's 156 dimes are the most for a Terrapin in a single season since Bob Cousy Award winner and current guard for the Milwaukee Bucks Greivis Vasquez dished 208 in 2009-10. He is one of only 12 Terrapins to record 150 or more assists in a single season. Trimble was one of only four sophomores named to the Wooden Award national ballot on March 5.
• Senior forward Jake Layman is one of only 28 players in Maryland history to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds. He is 24th in scoring (1,347) and 23rd in rebounding (645) in Terrapin all-time annals. He is also tied for eighth all-time in games played (135). He has established career-highs in field goal percentage (.502), free throw percentage (.808), and three point percentage (.382) this season.
