Eight Terps Selected in Inaugural UWLX Draft

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – In the inaugural draft for the United Women's Lacrosse League on Wednesday, eight former Terps were selected for the first-ever UWLX season, which will take place this summer. Maryland women's lacrosse had the most players selected in the first draft.

There are four teams for the inaugural season of the UWLX: Baltimore Ride, Boston Storm, Long Island Sound and Philadelphia Force. In Wednesday's draft, 40 players were selected, and 40 more spots will be decided upon following the league's Combine Camp on May 1.

Former two-time Tewaaraton-winning midfielder Katie Schwarzmann was selected as the first overall pick by Baltimore. Classmate and U.S. teammate attacker Alex Aust was also selected by the Ride as the first pick in the second round.

The 2015 Big Ten Attacker of the Year Brooke Griffin was picked first in the fourth round by Baltimore. The 2016 IWLCA National Defender of the Year Megan Douty was selected second in the fifth round by Long Island. Defender Casey Pepperman was picked third in the sixth round by Philadelphia and two-time All-American Dana Dobbie was selected fifth in the seventh round.

In the eighth round, midfielder Beth Glaros was picked first to the Ride and midfielder Kelly McPartland was selected sixth by Long Island.

A second draft will be held following the NCAA season so current college seniors can participate. Each final roster will have 17 active players and three reserve.

The UWLX coaching staffs also feature numerous former Terps. Maryland standout Jen Adams, who graduated in 2001, is the Baltimore Ride head coach while Boston Storm head coach Amy Patton is a 1988 Maryland graduate. The Philadelphia Force's head coach, Missy Doherty, is a 1997 Terp alumna. All three are also head coaches at the collegiate level at Loyola, Dartmouth and Penn State, respectively. Former Maryland All-American Alex Kahoe will serve as an assistant coach for Philadelphia.

The inaugural season will kick off on Saturday, May 28, when the Baltimore Ride and Long Island Sound compete at the US Lacrosse National Tournament. The season will continue for two months, ending with championship play on July 30.
