Cummings Leads #1 Terps on Senior Day

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Senior midfielder Taylor Cummings recorded seven points as the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team (14-0, 3-0 B1G) defeated No. 8 Ohio State (11-2, 2-1), 15-5, Saturday afternoon.
 
“I thought the team played well today,” head coach Cathy Reese said. “Ohio State is a really good team, and I thought both the offense and defense came out and did some really nice things. It was great to honor the seniors before the game and get the win for them.”
 
Cummings notched five goals and two assists while also recording five ground balls, four draw controls and one caused turnover. Sophomore attacker Megan Whittle scored a hat trick while junior midfielder Zoe Stukenberg, sophomore midfielder Taylor Hensh and freshman midfielder Jen Giles each tallied two goals. Freshman attacker Caroline Steele scored once.
 
The Buckeyes took a 2-0 lead four minutes into the game but Whittle scored twice to even the game at 13:25. Giles weaved through two defenders to score at 9:28 and Cummings tallied a free-position goal at 8:49.
 
Ohio State tallied a goal to pull within one before Giles and Hensh posted goals to take a 6-4 lead. After another Buckeye goal, Whittle completed her first-half hat trick at 1:58 as the Terps took a 7-4 halftime lead.
 
The Terps outscored the Buckeyes 8-1 in a second half. Cummings scored two goals within one minute before setting up Stukenberg for a pair of goals as Maryland lead 11-4 at 14:55.
 
Hensh notched another goal at 14:13 before Cummings scored twice to bring the Terps' lead to 10 at 12:08. Ohio State scored a free-position goal at 8:15. Steele scored the final goal of the game off a Stukenberg assist with 31 seconds remaining and Maryland took the 15-5 win.
 
Steele posted a game-high three caused turnovers while Stukenberg picked up four draw controls. Whittle, Stukenberg and senior defender Alice Mercer each notched three ground balls.
 
Prior to the game, Maryland's seniors Bryn Boucher, Caitlin Crouse, Molly Fleming, Annie Lynch, Mercer and Cummings were honored. In their careers, the seniors are 41-0 at home.
 
The Terps play in their final game of the regular season vs. Virginia next Wednesday, April 20, at 8 p.m.
