COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Junior Sarah Calta and Sophomore Skylynne Ellazar have sustained injuries that will cause them to miss time on the field.
On Friday evening against #2 Michigan, Calta tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her knee and will miss the remainder of the 2016 season. The junior captain will have surgery in the nearby future.
“Sarah was having a great season and I was sorry to see it end like this,' said head coach Julie Wright. “I know she will continue to be a great leader and teammate throughout the rest of the season.”
The Reistertown, Md. native was having a career year on the field. Going into Friday's game, Calta played in all 44 games and was second on the team with a .331 batting average. Calta has been sensational the last two months of the season, batting a team leading .408 in conference play. In the Ohio State and Nebraska series, the junior hit an incredible .632 with two triples and five RBIs. Calta led the team with four triples and ranked third in the Big Ten in that category.
Ellazar has been diagnosed with a concussion and will miss this weekend's series against #24 Minnesota. She will be evaluated further next week to determine her status for the rest of the season.
The sophomore leads the team in batting average (.381), hits (53), on base percentage (.442), and slugging percentage (.525).
