
Richardson, Ababio Tally Wins on Day One of Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomores Kayla Richardson and Claudia Ababio both won their respective field events to highlight Maryland's first day of action at the 122nd Penn Relays Thursday. The historic meet continues today before wrapping up action Saturday evening.
Richardson smashed her career-best mark in the long jump with a mark of 5.95 meters (19-6.25) en route to a victory in the event. The Maplewood N.J. native's jump topped a field of over 40 competitors, and was 2.25 inches off the next furthest in the event.
Ababio notched the second win of the day for the Terps in the hammer throw, setting a new career-best with a toss of 55.11 meters (180-9). The Clarksburg, Md. product made her final throw of the competition count, besting second place by over a meter to sit atop the field of 30.
Alexandra Cimino set a new career-best in the 400 hurdles, finishing in 1:00.84 to lead the Terps with an eighth place finish. Teammates Tylor Tucker (1:02.22) and Thalia Cooper (1:04.05) were 24th and 38th (respectively) in the event.
Johnna Dominick took 12thin the high jump, clearing 1.67 meters (5-5.75). Senior Chioma Onyekwere was fifth in the shot put championship with a throw of 15.77 meters (51-9).
Senior Katie Nappi, junior Sydney Almeida and sophomore Louis Corgliano capped off the evening for the Terps in the distance events, first starting with a 11th place finish in the 3000 steeplechase (10:42.98) for Nappi. The mark was six seconds faster than her previous career-best in the race, while Almedia went a career-best 17:17.89 in the 5000. Corgliano was 20th in the men's 3k steeple, finishing in 9:19.00.
