CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Chioma Onyekwere continued her stellar senior campaign Friday at the University of Virginia Quad Meet, breaking a 34-year old school record in the discus throw. Her mark of 54.24 meters (177-11) won the event, and smashed the previous Maryland record of 170-05 set back in 1982 by Marita Walton.
The Maryland women had several standout performances on day, which included athletes from Virginia, Penn and Columbia. Onyekwere also threw the shot put, improving upon her season-best with a toss of 15.97 meters, good for second in the field.
Sophomore Peyton Wade also claimed a victory in the field events for the Terps in the high jump. Her leap of 1.78 meters was a season-best, while senior Johnna Dominick (1.70m) and sophomore Isabella Laurel (1.65m) were second and fourth (respectively). Sophomore Kayla Richardson was the top Terp in the long jump, clearing 5.75 meters to place second.
Junior Micha Powell took third in the 200, running 24.17. Sophomore Chandler Baxter was 13th in the event, crossing the line in 25.90. The Terps went 2-3-4 in the 400 meter hurdles, led by a second-place 1:00.66 from junior Taylor Tucker.
Junior Catherine Voelpel was sixth in the 800, crossing the line in 2:14.22 while junior Rachelle Alexander (2:16.50) and Charlotte Staver (2:18.32) finished not far behind.
Sophomore Alexandra Lucki notched third place in the 1500, finishing in 4:31.10. Junior teammate Alexa Squirini was 12th in the event, finishing in 4:50.05.
On the men's side, the Terps were dominant in the 100 meter dash, placing the top two runners in the field. Junior Brandon Thompson won the event with a mark of 10.54, just two hundredths of a second off his season best. Freshman AJ Ruffin posted a season-best, taking second in 10.76.
Sophomore Alex Leto was the top Terp in the 400, posting a second place finish with a mark of 48.46. Senior Dan Trettel posted his fastest time of the year in the 1500, finishing fourth in 3:54.94.
The men's 4x400 relay claimed victory for the Terps, as Alex Leto, Brandon Thompson, TJ Bleichner and Paul Joseph combined to run a season-best 3:14.34.
The Maryland track and field teams return to action today at Virginia for the Lou Onesty Invite.
