COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The Maryland softball team honored their seniors and reflected on their 2016 season at the team banquet on Sunday night.
Over ninety people, including members of the team, families, support staff, and friends gathered in Heritage Hall at the Xfinity Center to celebrate the year, which wrapped up just a few hours before the banquet with a 10-8 win over Indiana.
After head coach Julie Wright began the banquet with opening remarks, dinner was served to all in attendance.
Speeches were given by Coach Wright, assistant coaches Lisa Carey and Lisa Norris, the freshman class, the two seniors: Corey Schwartz and Lindsey Schmeiser, captain Juli Strange, and Brenna Nation.
With their careers coming to a close, Lindsey Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz were recognized throughout the banquet; receiving framed jerseys, given haku's by Hawaiian teammate Skylynne Ellazar and a portrait painted by teammate Sarah Calta, and played a highlight/tribute video of their careers at Maryland.
To wrap up the banquet, five awards were given out. Voted on by the team, these five awards were presented to the most deserving Terrapin player in each category.
Team MVP: Lindsey Schmeiser
- Schmeiser completed an illustrious Terrapin career this season. The Dunkirk, Md. native will go down as one of the best Maryland softball players ever, batting .326 for her career and breaking program records for all-time home runs and runs-scored, and single season RBIs and doubles. This season, Schmeiser broke the home run record against then #5 Alabama and the runs-scored record in front of her home crowd against Michigan State.
Offensive Player of the Year: Skylynne Ellazar
- Ellazar led the team this season with a .399 batting average, the best on the team and the third best mark in program history. The sophomore led the team in batting average, hits, runs, doubles, slugging and on base percentage, and total bases.
Defensive Player of the Year: Kylie Datil
- Datil was a force, starting every game but one in center field for the Terps. The junior led the Maryland outfield with 63 putouts, and threw a remarkable seven opponents out trying to reach an extra base.
Clubhouse Award: Kristina Dillard
- Named a captain in the fall after only three months as a Terrapin, Dillard was given the Clubhouse Award for being a leader of the Maryland softball team all year long. The Hanover, Md. native was second on the team in batting average (.342) and doubles (10), while leading the team in RBIs (30). Dillard also led the Big Ten in runners caught stealing, with sixteen.
Maryland Pride Award: Sarah Calta
- A Maryland Terrapin lifer, Sarah Calta busted onto the scene in her junior 2016 season, batting .331 from the plate, and .408 in conference. The Reisterstown, Md. native won the Maryland Pride award for exhibiting pride for her state and school all season long. Calta was the captain of the outfield, won the ICA Academic Achievement Award for highest GPA on the team, and was stellar on and off the field.
