Calta Named Second Team All-Big Ten

ROSEMONT, Ill.- Junior outfielder Sarah Calta has been named to the All-Big Ten Second Team today, as voted on by the league's 14 head coaches.

A junior captain from nearby Reisterstown, Md., Calta erupted come conference time in 2016, batting .408 in Big Ten play, after just batting .278 in non-conference games.

“Sarah worked extremely hard all season to have the year she had,” said head coach Julie Wright. “I am very proud of her efforts this year. She earned every bit of her success.”

In the first two Big Ten series against teams ranked in the top 25 at some point this season, Ohio State and Nebraska, Calta was an incredible 12-for-19 with two triples and five RBIs. Overall on the season, the speedy junior totaled four triples, which ranked third in the Big Ten.

Calta gives Maryland their fourth All-Big Ten honor in just two years in the conference. Last season, Lindsey Schmeiser racked first-team honors while senior's Erin Pronobis and Shannon Bustillos were tabbed to the second team.

Michigan took home a handful of awards with Sierra Romero being named the Big Ten Player of the Year, Megan Betsa the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, and Carol Hutchins the Big Ten Coach of the Year. Minnesota's Maddie Houlihan was awarded the conferences Freshman of the Year.
