LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Maryland wrestling team had a number of highlight performances over the weekend as several Terps were in action at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Junior Nationals in Las Vegas, Nevada. Maryland had entries in both the Greco-Roman and freestyle competitions, which feature some of top young wrestlers from across the nation.
Maryland's lower weights got the weekend started on Thursday, as Michael Beck, Danny Boychuck and Breandan Coughlin all finished as Greco-Roman All-Americans. Beck was the top placer for the Terps in the style, finishing third at 55 KG with a 4-1 record. After dropping his opening his opening round match, Beck rattled off four straight wins while avenging his loss to Drew West (Eastern Iowa Wrestling Club) in the consolation semis. Beck went on to win the third place match by decision, 11-9 over Dalton Duffield (Oklahoma).
Boychuck recorded a sixth place finish at 66 KG with a 4-3 record on the day, posting three technical falls and a pin over Jose Rubio (RMN-OTC) in the fifth round of consolation. Coughlin went 3-2 at 50 KG to post a fifth place finish, which included a fall over Ryan Chauvin (Central Florida Wrestling) in the fifth place match.
Youssif Hemida shined for the Terps in the freestyle competition, taking home a fourth place finish to secure All-America honors at the event. Hemida fired off three straight tech falls to start his day in the 120 KG bracket, then notched a decision over Jake Gunning (Buffalo RTC) in the consolation semis for his final victory.
All four qualify for UWW World Team Trials in Irving, Texas May 20-22.
