ROSEMONT, Ill. – Freshman second baseman Nick Dunn and sophomore right handed pitchers Taylor Bloom and Brian Shaffer were named to the All-Big Ten Third Team, the conference announced Tuesday.
Dunn was also named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team along with outfielder Marty Costes. Dunn started all 53 games for the Terps and leads the team in average (.302) and doubles (15). He leads all Big Ten freshmen in, average, doubles and runs scored (39). The Sunbury, Pa., native also has 28 RBI and leads the team in hits with 64.
Bloom emerged as Maryland's Saturday starter after a great end to 2015 and did not disappoint, notching a 6-4 record with a 2.46 ERA, the sixth-best in the conference. Bloom tossed five complete games, the most in the Big Ten and eight-most in the country and accumulated 95.0 IP, the third most in the Big Ten and the fourth most in a single season in Maryland history.
The Crofton, Md., had more starts (13) than walks (9) and struck out 56 batters. His walks per nine innings mark (0.85) is first in the Big Ten and sixth in the country. Two of Bloom's complete games came in under 100 pitches.
Shaffer finished weekends for the Terps as their Sunday starter and accumulated seven wins, the 10th most in a single season in school history. Shaffer's 2.85 ERA, the 14th-best mark in the Big Ten, was done in 94.2 IP, the fourth most in the Big Ten and fifth most in a single season in school history. Shaffer's WHIP of 0.94 is 17th-best in the country.
The Pylesville, Md., native matched Bloom with more starts (14) than walks (13) and notched 67 strikeouts, tied for 11th-best in the Big Ten. Shaffer stifled opposing batters to the tune of a .220 average against, the seventh-best in the Big Ten. Shaffer was named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week once, following a 99-pitch complete game shutout of Cal State Fullerton on the road.
Costes started 48-of-50 games played in the outfield and led all Big Ten freshmen in home runs with eight, a mark that was tied for the Maryland team lead, and RBI (34). Costes led Maryland in RBI and slugging percentage (.460). Costes had two multi-homer games and led the squad with nine multi-RBI games.
Anthony Papio was Maryland Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient. The fifth-year senior has played 226 games, the ninth-most of any active player in the nation and batted .250 with three home runs and four triples this season.
Maryland returns to action this Wednesday with Indiana in the opening round of the 2016 Big Ten Tournament in Omaha, Neb. The game can be seen live on BTN with first pitch from TD Ameritrade Park scheduled for 10 a.m. ET.
