Maryland Hosts Indiana On Senior Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Seniors Lindsey Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz will play their final series at the Maryland Softball Stadium this weekend, as Maryland welcomes Indiana for a three-game Big Ten series. 

This weekend on the diamond

Maryland will host Indiana for the first time ever this weekend in College Park. The two Big Ten foes will play a standard Friday-Saturday-Sunday series at the Maryland Softball Stadium.

Friday's game will begin at 6:00 p.m., Saturday's at 2:00 p.m., and the final home game of the year on Sunday will have a first pitch of 1:00 p.m with senior day ceremonies happening right before the game.

It's Senior Weekend at the Maryland Softball Stadium, as we honor the career of two four year starters: Lindsey Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz. There will be events planned all weekend long to recognize our seniors, culminating in Senior Day on Sunday. 

Friday will be Military Appreciation Night, with dollar popcorn being available all evening long. 

Saturday is Girl Scout Day, with those K-8 receiving a free Maryland bage.

Saturday and Sunday's contests will stream online on BTN Plus, which requires a subscription, with Alex Flum and Erin Pronobis on the call. 

Admission is free to all games at the Maryland Softball Stadium.

Last time out

  • Maryland has hit a rough stretch over the past few streaks, losing eleven straight games. The Terps have faced real formidable opponents over the past few weeks as Maryland has faced the top three teams in the Big Ten, all on the road: Penn State, #2 Michigan, and #24 Minnesota.
  • Kristina Dillard has led the Terps from the plate over the past eleven games facing the nation's best, batting .393 (11-28) with six doubles and two RBIs. The junior captain was a remarkable, 8-for-10 in the Penn State series.

  • On the season, the Terps are hitting .273 with a .351 on base percentage and a .373 slugging percentage. Maryland has cracked 335 hits, scored 167 runs, knocked 54 doubles, and totaled 458 bases.
  • Skylynne Ellazar has been a force from the plate all season. Through 46 games, the Hawaii native is batting a team leading .381 by way of 53 hits and 28 runs. Ellazar ranks tenth in the Big Ten in batting average.
  • Kristina Dillard and Sarah Calta have also produced in the lineup. The captain duo rank second and third on the team in batting average, with Calta batting .331 and Dillard .329. Dillard shares the doubles lead (9) with Ellazar, while Calta leads the team and ranks third in the Big ten in triples (4).

ScOUTING Indiana

  • Indiana enters this weekend at 26-23 overall and 8-12 in the Big Ten. Heading into the final weekend of conference play, the Hoosiers stand in ninth place; sharing a three-way tie with Purdue and Rutgers.
  • Rebecca Blitz leads the Hoosiers from the plate, batting .350 with 57 hits and 17 RBIs. CaraMia Tsiringos is the Hoosiers' slugger, belting six homers, five doubles, and 23 RBIs; good for a slugging percentage of .531.
  • The Hoosiers pitch by committee, with a three-member staff. Tara Trainer, Josie Wood, and Emily Kirk all have ERAs hovering around 3.45. Trainer leads the team in strikeouts (172) and opposing batting average (.206).
  • Head Coach Michelle Gardner is in her eighth season at the helm of the Indiana softball program after coming from the University of Nevada.
  • Maryland took the series from the Hoosiers last year in Indiana, as the Terps posted their best offensive weekend of 2015. As a team, Maryland scored 35 runs in three games and hit .394. Kylie Datil was 3-for-4 with three runs, and Lindsey Schmeiser went 6-for-12 with a dinger, four RBIs, and .600 on base percentage. 

Sky's the Limit

  • Skylynne Ellazar has been nothing short of sensational from the plate this season.
  • The Hawaii native leads the Terps in batting average, hits, runs, and doubles, slugging percentage, and on base percentage. Ellazar ranks top fifteen in the Big Ten in two categories, including ranking tenth in batting average.
  • Right now, Ellazar also holds the best career batting average in Maryland softball history at .364.
  • Over the past 27 games, Ellazar holds a .403 batting average.

Legendary Lindsey

  • In her senior season, Lindsey Schmeiser has put together quite the Terrapin career.
  • Schmeiser has earned numerous accolades during her Terrapin career, including 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year, First-Team All ACC, First-Team Big Ten, and Big Ten Player of the Week (3/16/15).
  • The week of February 20th might've been Schmeiser's most successful yet. On Sunday Feb 21, Lindsey broke the school home run record. On Monday Feb 22 she was named a 2016 Senior CLASS Award candidate. To cap it off, on Tuesday Feb 23 she was named the Solomon Eye Terp of the Week.
  • The Dunkirk, Md. native is climbing atop the all-time ranks in numerous categories. Schmeiser is fourth in Maryland softball batting average ranks (.327), has the most home runs (32), and runs (137) in Maryland softball history and is eight doubles (38) away from breaking the school doubles record, held by Lindsey Klein and Shannon Bustillos.
  • Last season, Schmeiser broke the single-season double record (21) and had a 23 game hitting streak. In her freshman year, Schmeiser had the most RBIs (59) in a single season ever.

Dillard Dagger

  • Junior Captain, Kristina Dillard has made quite an impact in her first season wearing Maryland colors.
  • A transfer from the University of Louisville, the Hanover, Md. native returned home and instantly made her presence known, as she was voted as a team captain.
  • Dillard has done damage on the field, the junior ranks second on the team with a .329 batting average. She also ranks second in RBI's (28) and total bases (63). The transfer shares the doubles lead (9) with Ellazar after smashing two this previous weekend.
  • Behind the dish, the vocal leader has fourteen “Dillard Darts” this season (runners caught stealing), which leads the Big Ten.

Senior Spotlight

  • Both four year starters, Lindsey Schmeiser and Corey Schwartz will wrap up their Maryland softball careers over the next week.
  • Schwartz has 126 career hits and seventeen home runs, which ranks tenth all-time. In her junior season, Schwartz batted a career high .320; leading the team in home runs with fifteen, runs with fifty, and total bases with 116, ranking top ten in the Big Ten in all three categories.
  • Schmeiser holds program records in all-time home runs (32) and runs (136) and single season doubles (21) and RBIs (59). Schmeiser also ranks second all-time in career doubles (38) and RBIs (137) and has the fourth highest career batting average (.327).
