COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland track and field teams competed in their final home meet of the season Friday evening for the annual Jim Kehoe Twilight Meet at the Kehoe Track & Field Complex. The Terps battled wet and rainy conditions on the track, but managed to turn in several solid results as the 2016 outdoor season winds down.
Jim Kehoe exceled as a middle-distance runner at Maryland, setting school records in the 2-mile run and 880-yard run. Mr. Kehoe returned to the University of Maryland and served as the Track and Field coach, beginning in 1946.
Mr. Kehoe then went on to become the University's athletic director in 1969 and served in the position for nine years until his resignation in 1978. He was a 1998 U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee.
Congressional Medal of Honor recipient and Maryland track alumnus Flo Groberg returned to campus to serve as the honorary starter for the annual alumni mile.
Women
Senior Chioma Onyekwere set a new personal best in the shot put to highlight the field events, throwing 16.45 meters to take first. She also posted the top throw in the discus (51.37m). Claudia Ababio was just off her season-best in the weight throw with a toss of 54.75 meters.
Sophomore Kayla Richardson posted her second consecutive victory in the long jump, leaping 5.65 meters to top the field. She previously set a new career-best of 5.95 meters to win the event at the Penn Relays last weekend. Fellow sophomore Breanna Coleman posted a win in the triple jump (11.51m). Senior Jillian Maloney topped a field of five Terrapins in the javelin, throwing 36.22 meters to win.
Peyton Wade was the top performer in the high jump, clearing 1.75 meters to take the event, while Johnna Dominick was behind her with a leap of 1.70 meters. Wade posted another victory in the 100 meter hurdle with a time of 14.42.
Sophomore Alexandra Lucki set a new personal best in the 1500, running 4:23.71 to win the event. Also inside the top-10 was Katie Nappi (4:37.64), Emily Vandewater (4:42.23), Catherine Sheffo (4:45.96) and Sydney Almeida (4:51.03).
Junior Micha Powell posted another solid time in the 400, finishing in 53.37 to top the field. Junior Catherine Voelpel was the top finisher for UMD in the 800, crossing the line in 2:12.34 to place ninth. Chelsea Cox (Unattached) set a new Kehoe facility record in the event with a mark of 2:04.82.
Maryland had the top team in the 4x400 relay, as the 'A' squad finished in 3:47.35 to win the event.
Men
Junior Brandon Thompson was the top Terp in the 100, hitting 10.63 to take second in the field. Sophomore Diego Lyon posted win for Maryland in the 110 hurdles, finishing in 14.89.
Sophomore Alex Leto was the top performer in the 400, finishing in 48.72 while teammate Eric Thomas was slightly behind in 49.29. Senior Dan Trettel was the top Maryland runner in the 1500 meter event, taking fifth with a mark of 3:49.61.
Freshman TJ Bleichner had the top time for Maryland in the 800, finishing in 1:55.52 while Brandon Thompson was the fastest Terp in the 200 (21.27).
Nick Pulli won the discus (41.71m) and was second in the hammer throw with a mark of 46.71 meters. Jordan Landsman cleared 1.95 meters in the high jump to take second.
Maryland will return to action next Friday, May 13 for the Big Ten Championships hosted at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. The event will run through Sunday, May 15.
