Dewey Elected SAAC President for 2016-17

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Rising senior Hannah Dewey of the Maryland softball team will take the reigns next year as the Student Athlete Advisory Committee president. Dewey was elected as the organization's president for the 2016-17 academic year in the SAAC elections earlier this spring, and will take over for now-graduated Amy Dion of the Maryland volleyball team.

“We're excited Hannah was elected to be the SAAC President,” said Senior Associate Athletic Director for Academics & Student Development Sue Sherburne.  “She shares our mission to enhance the student-athlete experience and to provide student-athletes opportunities for personal, leadership and career growth. She's committed to helping her peers be competitive both on the playing field and in the job market. I look forward to her leadership and to working with her this coming year.”

Dewey is a three-year member of the softball program and has started in every game for Maryland the past two seasons. The pitcher/outfielder hit .273 for the Terps in 2016, notching 30 RBI and 19 runs.  She's thrown 179 innings from the circle over the past two years, amassing 97 strikeouts. The Temecula, Calif. native will draw from her experience on the diamond to help guide her in the upcoming year.

“Over these past few seasons I've definitely learned how to push through adversity and work together with the people around me,” said Dewey. “Our coach [Julie Wright] always talks about putting your piece into the team and figuring out what your piece is, and how it's important to having a successful team. You don't always get to choose who's around you, but if you're able to adapt to personalities and see peoples' strengths and weaknesses, it can help you put in your best piece. I'm really looking forward to this next year with the SAAC, and I hope I can transition what I've learned on the field into this leadership role.”

Dewey first got involved with SAAC as a sophomore, shadowing a teammate before becoming a general SAAC member and applying to become the organization's next president. Dewey's plans for next year include bridging the gap between student-athletes and administrators and expanding the Terps Got Talent and Terpsgiving programs.

“Hannah has done some amazing things with the SAAC, and is a great representative for our program, the Big Ten and the NCAA,” said head coach Julie Wright. “This will be an outstanding opportunity for her in the coming year.”

Dewey is an agricultural resource economics major with a minor in global poverty, and is currently interning with the NCAA offices in Washington, DC this summer.
