COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland junior right-handed pitcher Mike Shawaryn was selected in the fifth round (148th overall) by the Boston Red Sox on day two of the 2016 MLB Draft Friday afternoon.
Shawaryn currently holds five school records; career wins (30), career strikeouts (307), career innings pitched (307.1), single season wins (13) and single season strikeouts (138). He was named a first team All-American in 2015 and a freshman All-American in 2014.
“We're extremely happy for Mike,” head coach John Szefc said. “Mike is a first class guy on and off the field and he was worked incredibly hard over the last three years to put himself in this position. We are excited to see what he does in the future.”
A native of Carneys Point, N.J., Shawaryn finished his junior campaign with six wins and a 3.18 ERA. He tossed 99.0 IP, the sixth-best mark in the Big Ten, while allowing just a .195 average against, the third-best mark in the conference. Shawaryn's 97 strikeouts was fourth in the Big Ten.
Shawaryn's fine 2016 followed a sensational 2015 campaign after which he was named a first-team All-American and to the All-Big Ten First Team. The right-hander set school records for season wins (13) and Ks (138) while helping the Terps make their second straight Super Regional appearance. Shawaryn notched a 1.71 ERA, the 10th-best single season mark in Maryland history.
After the 2015 season, Shawaryn became the second Maryland player, and first since 1979, to represent the United States when he suited up for the USA Baseball Collegiate National team. Shawaryn hurled 10 and 1/3 innings during a summer tour that saw him face Chinese Taipei and Cuba in series.
As a freshman, Shawaryn earned freshman All-American honors following a season that saw him win a then school record 11 games. Shawaryn put up at 3.12 ERA and struck out 72.
Throughout his career, Shawaryn accrued five Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors and was named NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week in 2015 after a 13 strikeout performance against Cal State Fullerton.
Shawaryn is the 17th draft pick under Maryland's current coaching staff, led by Szefc. He is the fifth Maryland player ever selected by the Red Sox following Matt Marquis (2011), Tom Gordon (1982), David Suave (1971) and Philip Corddry (1969).
