COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior right-handed pitcher Mike Rescigno and incoming freshman left-handed pitcher Tyler Blohm will both pitch for the Maryland baseball team next season after declining to sign professional contracts.
Rescigno, who saved three games for the Terrapins last season, was selected in the 25th round by the San Francisco Giants but will return for his senior campaign in College Park. A hard throwing right-handed reliever, Rescigno struck out 23 in 19 and a third innings pitched last season.
"It's really important when one of our guys currently in the program stays for their last year," head coach John Szefc said. "I think the extra year in college will help Mike when he begins his pro career next year. He's having a great summer wiht the Redbirds, and he will be one of the anchors of our bullpen in the spring."
Rescigno has starred this summer for the Baltimore Redbirds of the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, becoming an all-star selection after putting up a 0.73 ERA with 14 strikeouts to two walks in 12.1 IP.
Blohm, who was chosen in the 17th round by the Baltimore Orioles, has also been a standout for the Redbirds this summer, sporting a 2.34 ERA in 23.1 IP. He was named to the CRCBL All-Star game for his efforts.
"Tyler had a great senior year and has had a great summer," Szefc said. "We feel great that he chose to come to school and delay his pro career. The amount of time he spends in our program is going to help his development and will help him move through a pro system. I think it's important for the Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year to come to the University of Maryland."
A star for Archbishop Spalding, Blohm was named the Gatorade Maryland High School Player of the Year following a season that saw him go 9-0 with a 0.74 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 66.0 IP. Blohm won 25 games across for varsity seasons.
Maryland enters the 2017 campaign after winning 30 games for its fifth consecutive season, a school record, and a semifinal appearance in the Big Ten Tournament.
