COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Maryland baseball players Nick Dunn and Kevin Smith will participate in the 2016 Friendly's Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game after being named east division all-stars Saturday.
Smith will start at shortstop for the east division after starring for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox while Dunn was named a reserve following a standout first half of the season for the Brewster Whitecaps.
Maryland has two of the Big Ten's three CCBL all-stars this season. Senior catcher Nick Cieri was named to the game last summer.
After a season that saw him bat .259 with eight home runs and 34 RBI, Smith has been sensational for the Red Sox, batting .320 with eight doubles, seven runs scored and 11 RBI. The 2015 freshman All-American has been hot as of late with three consecutive multi-hit games.
Dunn is batting .319 with six doubles and 21 runs scored for the Whitecaps. He's also added a lone home run and 13 RBI. Before a recent cold spell, the Sunbury, Pa., native had raised his average to a high of .368 on July 9. In 2016, Dunn led Maryland in average (.300) and doubles (16) en route to earning Freshman All-American and All-Big Ten honors.
The all-star game is slated for Saturday, July 23 at Veterans Field in Chatham. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
