BALTIMORE – Former members of the Maryland women's lacrosse team will compete in the inaugural United Women's Lacrosse League championships this weekend to crown the first-ever champion in professional women's lacrosse history.
The semifinals and finals will be played at Homewood Field at Johns Hopkins University. The top-seeded Long Island Sound (6-2) will face No. 4 Philadelphia Force (2-6) on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. before No. 2 Boston Storm (5-3) takes on No. 3 Baltimore Ride (3-5) at 7:30 p.m. The championship game will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. All three games will be streamed live on ESPN3.
Twelve former Terps compete in UWLX. Attackers Dana Dobbie, Alex Aust and Brooke Griffin and midfielders Taylor Cummings, Katie Schwarzmann and Beth Glaros play for Baltimore. Midfielders Erin Collins and Kelly McPartland and defenders Megan Douty, Alice Mercer and Shanna Brady represent Long Island and defender Casey Pepperman competes for Philadelphia.
Former Terps Jen Adams and Missy Doherty serve as the head coaches for the Ride and Force, respectively, while Amy Patton is the head coach of the Storm. Maryland All-American Alex Kahoe is an assistant coach for Philadelphia.
Dobbie leads UWLX with 26 points (16G, 10A) while Schwarzmann has a league-best 12 assists to go with nine goals. Dobbie and Aust are tied for the league record for most points in a game with six while Aust holds the league record for most goals in a game with six. Schwarzmann holds the record for most assists in a game with four.
The four teams played an eight-game regular season, beginning in May. In the inaugural draft in April, eight Terps were selected, including Schwarzmann as the No. 1 overall pick. Brady and Collins were selected at the league's Combine Camp on May 1, and Cummings and Mercer joined UWLX following the collegiate season's championship weekend.
