COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior forward Chelsea Jackson tied the match with a goal in the 22nd minutes, but the Maryland women's soccer team would fall, 2-1, to TCU in its season opener at Ludwig Field Friday night.
The Terrapins (0-1-0) and Horned Frogs contested an evenly matched contest before Michelle Prokoff's scored the game winner in the 99th minute. Maryland held the advantage in shots (13-to-9) and corners (3-to-1).
After an uneventful start, Maryland notched the first few shots of the match, the closest coming from senior Lisa Bianchini. TCU opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Prokoff sent in a free kick from the right side that was headed down by Brittany Little and poked across the line by Meghan Murphy.
Maryland struck back a minute later. After a foul drawn near the midfield line, freshman Jlon Flippens sent a lofted ball that Jackson headed back across the face of goal. The tally represented Jackson's first as a Terrapin. The assist was the first of Flippens' college career. Courtney Hofer.
Jackson ended the half with a solid chance, taking aim from 19 yards out only to see the shot denied by Courtney Hofer.
The Terps pressed for the winning goal in the second half. In the 71st minute, Jackson played a ball through to Badham who shot just wide from close range.
Jackson was once again in the center of the action in the 79th minute. Sophomore Jarena Harmon made a solid run down the center of the field before sliding the ball off to Jackson in the box. The Round Rock, Texas native sent a curling effort that was brilliantly repelled by TCU keeper Katie Lund.
Lund made another fantastic save on the ensuing corner. Marisa Knott sent in a left-footed effort that fell to the feet of Badham. The sophomore tried to beat Lund, but the TCU keeper was up to the task. Maryland's final effort fell to the feet of Harmon, who could not finish after maneuvering clear of a pair of TCU backs.
TCU ended it in the 99th minute when Prokoff scored from close range after a scramble near the goal mouth.
The Terps saw four players (Jackson, Flippens, Bianchini and Badham) notched two or more shots. The game featured the Maryland debuts of Jackson, Flippens, Harmon, Knott, Stephanie Senn, Jenna Surdick and Hannah Hoefs.
Maryland returns to action Sunday to take on Gardner-Webb at Ludwig Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
