CARSON, Calif. – The No. 4 Maryland men's soccer team started the season off with a 1-1 draw at No. 16 UCLA at the StubHub Center Friday night.
Senior Alex Crognale scored the lone goal for the Terps (0-0-1) while the Maryland defense held UCLA scoreless the final 108:55 of the match.
UCLA struck first with two-on-one opportunity a mere 1:05 into the match. Jason Romero beat goalkeeper Cody Niedermeier to the far corner from short distance for the very early 1-0 lead.
But the Terps would not take long to answer. After junior transfer Jake Rozhansky's first shot of his Maryland career went off the crossbar, the Terps maintained possession and a ball from Cody Albrecht found the head of Crognale for Maryland's first goal of the season and a tie contest in the fifth minute.
Maryland held a 5-3 shot advantage at the half and of those strikes, two ricocheted off the crossbar.
Niedermeier was the star of the second half for Maryland, which held UCLA scoreless the final 88:55 of regulation. The redshirt senior made three fantastic saves to keep the Bruins off the board and push bonus time.
The Terps had one shot in each overtime period but were unable to find the game-winner.
"I think tonight was a fair result," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "UCLA is a terrific possession team and I loved how our team responded after surrendering that early goal."
Maryland returns to action when it plays host to Hartford on Monday in the home opener at 7 p.m. at Ludwig Field.
