COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 7 Maryland field hockey team received four goals from four different players en route to a 4-1 win over Indiana in its Big Ten opener at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Terrapins (5-2, 1-0 Big Ten) outshot the Hoosiers 23-11 and notched nine corners to Indiana's five while controlling possession throughout. Sophomore Olivia Reiter, graduate student Welma Luus, senior Grace Balsdon and junior Lein Holsboer tallied for the Terps.

“I'm really proud of our team,” head coach Missy Meharg said. “We played a lot of players and got a lot of shots on the board. You've got to just stay in it and know the shots are going to fall. Our women knew they were going to fall.”

Maryland struck first eight minutes in. Reiter got behind the Indiana defense and after seeing her initial shot saved, tapped the ball in for the first goal of her career. Balsdon had her first opportunity on goal in the 14th minute, but her effort off a corner was blocked away by Indiana keeper Noelle Rother.

Luus put the Terps up 2-0 just two minutes into the second half. The South Africa native found some space on the left side of the arc and fired a backhanded shot that beat Rother to the far post. Luus leads the Terps with six goals on the season.

Indiana found a goal in the 46th minute from leading scorer Kate Barber. Holliday denied Taylor Pearson's attempt to tie the match in the 52nd minute with a fantastic stop that saw the sophomore come out of the cage and make a diving play on a breakaway.

Maryland put the contest away with a pair of goals in quick succession from Balsdon and Holsboer. In the 60th minute, Holsboer triggered a corner that was knocked down by Sophie Pelzer and blasted into the back of the net by Balsdon from the top of the arc.

Holsboer found her first tally of the season just over a minute later. The junior powered in a shot from long range to give the Terps a 4-1 lead.

Holliday finished with a career high eight saves and was fantastic as Indiana gained momentum in the middle of the second half.

“Sarah was just confident,” Meharg said. “She's a great communicator and she believes she can do it. She's a very confident woman.”

Next, the Terrapins will play at No. 10 Princeton (3-2) Tuesday at 6 p.m. in a midweek matchup. Live stats will be available and the game will be streamed through the Ivy League Digital Network.
