COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Jarena Harmon notched five shots and Maryland's backline put forth a solid performance, but the Terps fell 1-0 in overtime to No. 25 Pepperdine Friday afternoon.
The Terrapins (2-2-1) fought well against the Waves before Rylee Baisden won the match for Pepperdine in the 99th minute. Freshman Jlon Flippens and junior Madison Turner performed well in the back, snuffing out Wave attacks throughout.
“We really played well,” head coach Ray Leone said. “That was a really fantastic game and it was a great performance. It was a good step forward for us.”
Senior Lisa Bianchini fired the first shot of the game, a long range shot that was saved in the third minute. The first half was a fairly even affair, with Pepperdine controlling the middle portion of the half before the Terrapins finished strong.
Harmon had the Terps' best chance of the first half in the 40th minute. The Washington, D.C., native received the ball at the top of the box with her back to goal and turned away from a defender before unleashing a shot that was palmed over the crossbar by Hannah Seabert.
The second half saw both teams have opportunities to finish off the contest. In the 49th minute, Cassie Phillips and Darby Moore played a pretty give-and-go that saw Moore fire wide off the side netting. Moore was at the center of the action again in the 57th minute, making a tremendous solo run down the center of the field before her through ball intended for Chelsea Jackson fell just short.
As Pepperdine pushed for a goal late in the half, Maryland's saw great defensive efforts from Flippens and Turner, along with Marisa Knott and Kady Badham. Flippens made numerous tackles to break up Wave attacks as they advanced towards goal. Redshirt sophomore Rachel Edyed, who came on in the second half for Stephanie Senn, made a career high seven saves to help keep Pepperdine off the board.
Maryland had several chances in the final 10 minutes. Harmon made a nice move around a defender on the right side of the box and laid the ball off to Jackson whose shot was saved. Harmon found herself on the end of another chance in the 87th minute, but couldn't get her outside of the foot effort past Seabert.
Flippens tried a curling effort with 30 seconds remaining, but it went just wide. Maryland's best chance of the overtime came in the 93rd minute when Phillips split two defenders and passed off to Harmon who couldn't' get her shot on frame. Baiden ended the match with a direct free kick goal from just outside the box.
Maryland returns to action at Appalachian State on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
