COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland senior right-handed pitcher Mike Rescigno topped Perfect Game's ranking of the top senior prospects for the 2017 MLB Draft in a list released Monday. Maryland senior catcher Nick Cieri checked in at No. 25 on the rankings.
Rescigno, who converted to pitching after his freshman season, dominated in the Cal Ripen League this summer en route to also being named Perfect Game's top draft prospect in the Maryland-based league. The Monmouth Beach, N.J., native went 2-1 with a 1.14 ERA and 19 strikeouts in 15.2 IP for the Baltimore Redbirds. Baseball America also named the right hander the top prospect in the Ripken League.
In 23 appearances for the Terrapins last season, Rescigno went 2-1 with a 5.59 ERA. He struck out 23 and notched three saves. Rescigno was included in various publications top prospects list during the fall, appearing on Perfect Game's top-100 college prospects list and top-250 draft prospects list in November. He was drafted in the 25th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants.
Cieri, who spilt time at catcher and DH last season, batted .256 with three home runs and 29 RBI in 54 appearances. A mainstay in the Maryland lineup the past two seasons, Cieri batted .301 with five home runs this summer in the Cal Ripken League.
Maryland is ranked in three preseason polls entering the 2017 season; D1Baseball (22), Baseball America (24) and Perfect Game (23).
The Terps open their season at the Clearwater Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. The Terps will take on Ball State in its opener on Friday, February 17 at 7 p.m. at Spectrum Field.
