Sunday's matchup is the sixth all-time between Maryland and Iowa. Maryland has won all four meetings since joining the Big Ten in 2014. Earlier this year, the Terps won 98-82 in Iowa City on Jan. 14. The Hawkeyes led 47-43 at halftime, but the Terrapins outscored them 28-12 in the third quarter to pull away. Brionna Jones led with 25 points, 10 boards. Shatori Walker-Kimbrough scored 22 points, 20 in the second half. Ieshia Small, Destiny Slocum and Brianna Fraser also hit double figures.
Head coach Brenda Frese grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, about 25 miles from the Iowa campus. She grew up attending Hawkeyes games and attended the Iowa basketball camps. Walker-Kimbrough played under Iowa head coach Lisa Bluder for USA Basketball in the Pan American Games in July 2015. They took silver in the tournament.
The Terps won at Illinois, 94-49, Thursday night in Champaign. All 12 eligible Terps scored five points or more in the win as the Terrapins' bench outscored the Illini's 47-2. Walker-Kimbrough led the way with 14 points, nine boards. Jones added 11 points and Slocum had eight points, nine assists and seven rebounds.
With the win, the Terrapins reached the 20-win mark for the 13th straight season and 23rd in program history.
Jones was named Co-Big Ten Player of the Week Monday for the second straight week and fourth time this year. Kaila Charles was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week for her first weekly honor. In the Terps' two wins, Jones averaged 18.0 points, 11.5 boards and 2.5 blocks. Charles averaged 17.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and shot 65.0 percent from the floor.
Jones is No. 5 on Maryland's rebounding list with 1,045 career boards. She is No. 10 on Maryland's scoring list with 1,629 points and needs two to pass Marcia Richardson at No. 9 (1,630). She currently leads the Big Ten with 14 double-doubles this year. Walker-Kimbrough is No. 7 on Maryland's all-time scoring list with 1,852 career points. She needs 27 points to pass Shay Doron at No. 6 (1,878). Walker-Kimbrough's career three-point percentage of 45.0% is currently the best in Maryland history ahead of Kristi Toliver's career percentage of 40.8%.
The Terrapins are No. 2 in the country in scoring (90.0), field goal percentage (.505), rebounding margin (+16.7) and third in scoring margin (+28.5). They are fourth in assists (20.5) and in assist/turnover ratio (1.4).
After Sunday's contest, Maryland will travel to Purdue (14-8, 5-3) Thursday for an 8 p.m. ET game at Mackey Arena. The Terps-Boilermakers matchup will be televised around the world on the Big Ten Network, BTN2Go.com and the BTN2Go app.
