Hemida Leads Terps with First Place Finish at Roadrunner Open

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Junior Youssif Hemida continued his impressive 2017-18 campaign on Sunday after winning the heavyweight division title at the Roadrunner Open.

After receiving a double bye as the top seed in the 285 pound class, Hemida went 4-0 with three wins by way of fall en route to a first place finish. He claimed his title by pinning Benjamin Stone from the University of Wisconsin.

Maryland's impressive run at the Roadrunner Open earned the team a fourth place overall finish. Along with Hemida the Terps were guided by Brendan Burnham, who finished third in the 165 pound class; Spencer Woods, who claimed a fourth place finish in the 184 pound bracket; and Justin Alexander and Josh Ugalde, who each finished sixth in the 157 pound and 174 brackets respectively.

"Our team wrapped up our West Coast trip with a solid day on Sunday," head coach Kerry McCoy said. "We were able to face many talented wrestlers from around the country, and I think it says a lot about the growth of our program that we were able to step up and earn a fourth place finish. We're continuing to get better every single day and we're excited to get back on the mat when we get home."

The Terps wrapped up their West Coast swing at the Roadrunner Open, following an 18-15 dual meet win at Stanford on Saturday. The Terps three wins surpasses the 2016-17 season's win total and is the team's first three match winning streak since the 2014-15 season.

Maryland also participated in the Wolfpack Open. Shawn Mosca was the standout for the Terps, earning an eighth place finish.

Maryland will be back in action Mat Town Open in Lockhaven, Pa., on Nov. 26, and then will continue its dual schedule with a conference bout at Northwestern on Dec. 2.
