Terps Earn Three Wins but Fall to No. 12 Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Redshirt sophomore Josh Ugalde (174 lbs.) picked up a win over a ranked opponent but Maryland fell to No. 12 Rutgers, 27-9.

Ugalde earned his first win of the season against No. 16 Jordan Pagano, 8-2 in the match. He was joined by teammates Ryan Diehl and Youssif Hemida who were victorious in their season debuts. Diehl (141 lbs.) defeated Michael Van Brill, 10-9 by decision. Hemida, who qualified for last year's NCAA Championships, closed out the day for Maryland with a 7-1 win by decision.

"Today was a great event in an awesome atmosphere," head coach Kerry McCoy said. "We faced a very good team in Rutgers and it was good to pick up a couple of wins against a quality opponent. We look forward to getting after it in practice this week and coming home to compete in front of our fans next week."

Rutgers took control of the match early on, with No. 2 Nick Suriano knocking off Brandon Cray, 24-7 (tech. fall). Freshman Michael Doetsch made his collegiate debut against No. 10 Scott DelVecchio at 113 lbs. Dotesch stayed in the match, but ultimately fell, 11-5 (maj. decision).

Diehl then got Maryland on the board and cut the Rutgers lead to 8-3, but the Scarlet Knights extended their lead with a win at 149 lbs.

Freshman and New Jersey native Kyle Cochran debuted at 157 lbs. but could not top No. 7 Richie Lewis. Rutgers then picked up another win before Ugalde upset Pagano at 174 lbs.

Redshirt sophomore Jaron Smith battled in a competitive match against No. 7 Nicholas Gravina, but fell, 10-4 (maj. dec). The Scarlet Knights then won at 197 lbs., and Hemida then closed out the Terps day with a win.

Maryland will be back in action for their home debut on Sunday, Nov. 12 against Campbell and George Mason. Campbell and George Mason will begin the action at 11 a.m., and Maryland will compete at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
