
Terps Travel to No. 5 LSU This Weekend

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland plays its second consecutive weekend on the road when it travels to No. 5 LSU for a three-game set. It is the fourth time in the last five seasons Maryland has faced an SEC team in a road series. Maryland is 0-3 against LSU all-time.

• The 2017 season is head coach John Szefc's fifth season in College Park. Szefc has led the Terps to four straight 30-win seasons and two NCAA Super Regional appearances, both program firsts. He is seven wins away from becoming the fastest head coach in Terrapin history to reach the 150-win mark.
• The Terps topped the Big Ten preseason coaches poll while D1Baseball, Perfect Game and Baseball America named Maryland the Big Ten favorites for the 2017 season. It is the third straight year D1Baseball has tabbed the Terps its Big Ten preseason frontrunner.
• Maryland returns 11 player that totaled 410 starts last season, 80 percent of the team's total. That experience extends to the mound where the Terps bring back six players that made up 73 percent of the squad's total starts. Maryland lost just one player that made a start on the mound last season (Mike Shawaryn).ON THE BASE PATHS
• After not stealing four bases in a single game at any time during 2016, Maryland did it twice in the opening weekend with four against Louisville and Alabama State.
• Maryland has eight steals through three games. It took the Terrapins 20 games into 2016 to reach eight steals (March 20, vs. Liberty).
• New student assistant and first base coach Anthony Papio has taken the reigns as the first base coach and main base running coach for Maryland in 2017.

• Sophomore Marty Costes starred in Maryland's opening weekend, sporting a .500 average with an OBP of .625. Costes leads Maryland in hits (6), triples (1) and is tied for the team lead in walks (3) and runs scored (3).
• Costes led all Big Ten freshman with nine home runs in 2016 and earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors twice, en route to being named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team.
• The Baltimore native had a standout summer, earning Cal Ripken League All-Star honors after batting .319 with seven home runs for the Baltimore Redbirds.

• Sophomore Nick Dunn slugged his first home run of the season against Louisville (2/18) to cap a solid opening three games.
• As a freshman, Dunn led Maryland in average (.300) and doubles (16) in 2016. He was tabbed third-team All-Big Ten and was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team.
• The Sunbury, Pa., native followed that up with a big summer in Cape Cod, earning all-star and all-league honors after batting .311 with eight doubles for the Brewster Whitecaps.
STARING AT THE SIX
• Junior Kevin Smith is a Baseball America and Perfect Game preseason first-team All-American after a spectacular summer that saw him emerge as one of the top prospects in the nation. He is Perfect Game, Baseball America and D1Baseball.com's preseason Big Ten Player of the Year.
• Smith raked in summer honors, with D1Baseball.com tabbing him as its Breakout Summer Prospect. Perfect Game named Smith an honorable mention summer All-American and the best defensive infielder in the CCBL. The scouting service also has Smith ranked 10th in its junior prospects list. D1Baseball and Baseball America named Smith the top prospect in the Big Ten.
•The East Greenbush, N.Y. native starred during the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox's CCBL title run, batting .301 with 12 doubles en route to all-star and all-league honors. He went 6-for-12 with a home run to earn League Championship Series MVP.

• Juniors Brian Shaffer and Taylor Bloom emerged as frontline weekend rotation options in 2016, with both earning third-team All-Big Ten honors.
• The duo had more combined starts (29) than walks (22) in 2016.
