WASHINGTON, D.C. – Seniors Zoe Stukenberg and Nadine Hadnagy of the No. 1 Maryland women's lacrosse team were announced as two of five finalists for the 2017 Tewaaraton Award Thursday.
Stukenberg and Hadnagy are co-captains for the undefeated Terps this season. The seniors were both unanimous All-Big Ten selections and named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team after leading Maryland to the conference regular season and tournament titles.
Stukenberg is a force across the field and was named Big Ten Midfielder of the Year. The Ellicott City, Md., native ranks in the top three of every statistical category on the team, including 44 goals, 22 assists, 66 points, 42 ground balls, 62 draw controls and 18 caused turnovers – all of which are already career highs.
Hadnagy leads Maryland's defense, which ranks 16th nationally with just 9.21 goals allowed per game. The Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Hadnagy leads Maryland with 23 caused turnovers and is third with 25 ground balls.
Maryland has produced seven Tewaaraton winners, the most in the history of the award. Jen Adams won the first Tewaaraton in 2001, and Caitlyn Phipps earned the honor in 2010. Katie Schwarzmann won back-to-back Tewaaratons in 2012 and 2013. Taylor Cummings became the first-ever three-time winner from 2014-16.
The Terps have had 19 Tewaaraton finalists in 14 years of the award. This is the fifth time Maryland has had two finalists in the same season.
Stukenberg and Hadnagy are joined by Olivia Hompe (Princeton), Marie McCool (North Carolina) and Kylie Ohlmiller (Stony Brook) as finalists.
The Tewaaraton Award annually honors the top male and top female college lacrosse player in the United States. Finalists come from a pool of 25 men's and 25 women's nominees. The Tewaaraton recipients will be announced June 1.
