LEXINGTON, Ky. – Seniors Micha Powell and Lisa Meneau both locked up bids to the 2017 NCAA Championships after qualifying with their performance sat the NCAA East Regional Friday.
Powell advanced to her fourth straight NCAA Championship event after setting a new season-best in the 400 meter dash Friday. The Ontario, Canada native went 52.15 to finish third in her heat and ninth overall in the event to secure a trip to Eugene. Powell entered the Regional as the No. 20 seed, but jumped 11 spots in the field to lock up a top-12 time.
Meneau qualified for her first career NCAA Championship event in style, running a career-best 56.35 in the 400 hurdles to finish fifth in the field. The Winchester, Va. took fourth in the fastest heat of the event, and improved three places upon her No. 8 seed to earn her first career trip to the NCAA Championships.
In the field, Claudia Ababio was just short of qualifying for NCAAs, taking 15th in the discus with a throw of 171-6 (52.29m). Ababio's weekend is not over, as she is set to compete in the shot put tomorrow at 6:00 pm.
Peyton Wade rounded of a highly successful junior season, hitting 5-8½ (1.74m) in the high jump to finish tied for 18th in the event. Wade will finish the year as a two-time Big Ten placer between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Ababio and sophomore Greg Thompson (discus) will wrap up action for the Terps at the NCAA East Regional tomorrow at the UK Outdoor Track and Field Complex.
