
Terps Begin NCAA Regional Play Friday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland enters its third NCAA Regional in the last four seasons this weekend in Winston-Salem, N.C. The third-seeded Terrapins will take on West Virignia in game one of the double elimination four-team regional Friday at 2 p.m.
Fans can watch all games live on ESPN3 or the WatchESPN App. Coverage can also be heard on the Maryland Baseball Network, with Terps Pregame Live starting 30 minutes before each game.
LEADING IT OFF
• Maryland enters its third NCAA Tournament appearance in four years, after ending a drought in 2014 that spanned 43 years (1971). The Terps have two wins against other teams in the Winston-Salem Regional. Maryland beat West Virginia 7-6 in College Park, Md. on April 11, and beat UMBC 6-2 in College Park, Md. on May 9.
• Maryland head coach John Szefc has won seven NCAA Tournament games in his career at Maryland, the most of any coach in program history. He is the only coach in Maryland history to lead the Terps to five consecutive 30-win seasons.
• Maryland's roster contains eight players with previous NCAA Tournament experience: Nick Cieri, Kevin Smith, Kevin Biondic, Jared Price, Tayler Stiles, Taylor Bloom, Brian Shaffer, and Ryan Selmer.
• Maryland has play nine games in the state of North Carolina (three in Cary, one in Chapel Hill, two in Wilmington, three in High Point). In games played in the Tar Heel state, the Terps are 5-4.
• Freshman Tyler Blohm's eight wins leads the Big Ten and already ranks tied for third all-time in Maryland single season history. Blohm was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Maryland's first player to ever win that award.
• Brian Shaffer was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, becoming the first Maryland player to win an overall conference player award in 25 years (Derek Hacopian, 1992 ACC Player of the Year). This week he was named a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist, the second in Maryland history (Mike Shawaryn, 2015)
• Kevin Smith has a hit in six-straight games, good for Maryland's longest current hitting streak. The shortstop hit .350 in the Big Ten Tournament en route to being named to the All-Tournament team for the second time in his career (2015).
