“This is really good competition,” Huerter said about his prior USA basketball experience. “Everyone vying for an opportunity is playing at a very high level.”
Huerter, who averaged 6.8 points, 1.6 and 1.0 seals a game in last summer's World Championships, recorded a tournament-high 14 points in a quarterfinal win against Chile.
Focused on leading Maryland to its fourth consecutive NCAA appearance beginning in November, Huerter has been working out with his teammates throughout the spring and summer to prepare for both the tryouts and the upcoming season. Huerter has focused on his strength and conditioning, improving his ability to finish at the basket and perfecting his shooting form inside the three-point line.
“I have been focused on my strength and conditioning and I have put on about eight pounds of muscle,” Huerter said. “I have been working with Justin Jackson on our one-on-one post moves - being able to finish, get to the basket, and play through contact.”
One of four returners from the 2016 U18 world championship team, Huerter will be in familiar territory with USA basketball.
“It is an overall great experience,” Huerter said. “You are getting great coaching and instruction and everyone involved is helping in your overall development.”
Huerter arrived in Colorado Springs on Sunday and will be working towards securing an official roster spot announced on Thursday.
Following the training camp practices - the USA-19 will immediately begin preparation for the World Championships in Cairo, Egypt on Saturday, July 1.
