#6 Terrapins Set For B1G/ACC Cup

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (1-0) will play in the Big Ten/ACC Cup this weekend at the Spooky Nook Sports Complex in Lancaster, Pa. The Terps will play No. 2 Duke (2-0) Friday at 7 p.m. and No. 12 Boston College (2-0) Sunday at 2 p.m.

• No. 6 Maryland is 1-0 after beating Saint Joseph's, 2-1, Sunday in College Park. The Hawks broke the scoreless tie with a penalty shot in the 42nd minute. Bodil Keus tied it up for Maryland off a penalty corner in the 52 minutes, then Sabrina Rhodes scored the game-winner with just over four minutes to play. RECAP | STATS

Scouting duke

• No. 2 Duke is 1-0 after beating William & Mary, 5-0, last weekend. Rose Tynan leads the Blue Devils with two goals scored.

• Maryland owns the all-time series at 32-11-3, but Duke has taken the three most recent matchups. In last year's Big Ten/ACC Cup, Duke won 1-0 in a tight match. Duke scored the game's lone goal in the 42nd minute. Maryland took 12 shots to Duke's 7, but couldn't convert. RECAP | STATS

Scouting boston college

• No. 12 Boston College is 2-0 after topping Quinnipiac, 6-1, and No. 18 Albany, 2-1, in doule overtime. Jaime Natale leads the Eagles with two goals so far this season.

• Maryland owns the all-time series over Boston College, 12-1. The Terrapins took last year's Big Ten/ACC Cup meeting, 3-1. Maryland scored first 16 minutes in. Boston College tied it up in the 52nd minute, then the Terps scored twice in the final five minutes to seal the win. RECAP | STATS

Maryland tabbed preseason top ten

• Maryland was tabbed as the No. 6 team in the country in the Penn Monto/Division I Coaches Preseason poll released Aug. 22.

• The Terrapins have started the year in the top 10 in each of the last 19 years, since 1999.

Three Terps Selected To Big Ten Players To Watch List

• Junioe Linnea Gonzales, seniors Lein Holsboer and Carrie Hanks were named to the Big Ten Players to Watch list earlier this week. The full list, click HERE.

• Hanks has been a leader of the Terrapins' defense the last three years, starting in all 69 games of her career. She's scored nine goals with 12 assists in her career. Hanks was named to the NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region Second Team for the second straight season last year.

• Holsboer earned NFHCA Third Team All-America honors last season, as well as All-Big Ten Second Team honors. She has 11 career goals and 24 career assists in her 68 career games.

• Gonzales was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2015. She has notched 20 career goals and six assists. The junior also earned NFHCA All-Mid Atlantic Region honors the last two seasons.

staff updates

• The Terrapins welcome two new assistant staff members in 2017. Former Terrapin Katie Bam joins the Terrapins as assistant coach and Marvin Bam comes as an assistant coach as well.

Katie Bam, a two-time Olympian, played for the Terrapins from 2007 through 2010, leading them to the 2008 and 2010 NCAA championships, as well as three ACC titles. A four-time NFHCA All-American, Bam was named ACC Player of the Year all four years of her career, and won the Honda Sports Award as the nation's top player twice. She represented the United States in the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

• Bam brings over 20 years of experience as a player and a coach to College Park. In 2017, he served as an assistant at Harvard and helpe the Crimson to its first Ivy League title since 2004. As a player, Bam earned 98 international caps, competing in over 30 international tournaments. A native of South Africa, Bam represented his home country in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, as well as at the 2002 and 2006 World Cups, the African Cup Championship and the Commonwealth Games. 

HOME SWEET HOME

Since its opening in 2003, the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has provided the Maryland hockey program a huge home field advantage.

• The Terps are 160-19 (.894) all-time at the Complex.

• Maryland won 38 straight games at the Complex from Oct.11, 2008 through Oct. 14, 2011. The streak ended with a 5-2 loss to then-No. 1 Old Dominion.

• The Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex has played home to 26 of Maryland's NCAA Tournament games and has played host to three Final Fours (2007, 2010, 2014). The Terrapins are 23-3 in those games and won the 2010 national title on their home field.

PACK THE HOUSE

• The Maryland field hockey team has increasingly attracted more and more fans to the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex season after season. The Terrapins have led the nation in attendance in five of the last seven years.

• An NCAA-record crowd of 2,381 came out to watch as Maryland beat North Carolina 3-2 in double overtime for the 2010 national championship at the Complex.

• Eight Terrapins, former and present, are currently on USA Field Hockey's national team rosters. 

• Jill Witmer competed with Team USA in the Rio Olympics last summer, along with volunteer assistant coach Stefanie Fee.

• Recent Terp alums Anna Dessoye andAlyssa Parker are on the U.S. Women's National Team. Senior Carrie Hanks and recent grad Kasey Tapman are on the U.S. Developmental Squad.

• Current Terps Brooke DeBerdine and Linnea Gonzales are on the U.S. Under-21 Team.

During Missy Meharg's tenure, the Terrapins have become one of the nation's most dangerous teams in overtime.

• The Terps are 63-24 (.724) all-time in games that went to overtime or penalty strokes.

• In Meharg's tenure, the Terps are 52-20 (.722) in overtime or penalty strokes games.
