COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland volleyball team (12-8, 3-5 Big Ten) took the first set from No. 13 Michigan but ultimately dropped the match, 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 22-25, 15-25).
"I thought we came ready to play," said head coach
Adam Hughes. "That was really good. After the Michigan State match we talked about how we need to start on time. We had some windows to try to get back into it in the third set but they had too many runs. They're an awfully good team that could be a top-10 team soon. No moral victories, but we're definitely getting closer."
Sophomore outside hitter
Erika Pritchard led the Terps all-around, posting a double-double midway through the second set. Pritchard ended the match with 18 kills and 13 digs. On the weekend, the sophomore totaled 42 kills to lead the way for Maryland.
Maryland outblocked Michigan 10-5 with redshirt freshman
Katie Myers leading the match with six blocks. In the first set, the Terps got four blocks to Michigan's one.
Freshman libero
Allegra Rivas also led the match in digs, with 22. Sophomore outside hitter
Hailey Rubino pitched in with 12 of her own.
The Terps started the match hot, jumping out to a 5-0 lead behind two kills from senior outside hitter
Liz Twilley. Maryland controlled the set the whole way, hitting .429 as a team, with Pritchard, Twilley and Myers all hitting over .300 and notching at least three kills. Sophomore setter
Nicole Alford assisted on 13 of Maryland's 14 kills and Maryland only had two attack errors. Myers and a pair of freshman, middle blocker
Rainelle Jones and outside hitter
Emma Schriner each had two blocks as the Terps won the battle at the net and Myers had two service aces. With the score at 19-16, Maryland ended on a 6-3 run sealing the deal with a Jones kill to take set one.
Maryland stayed tight in the second set but 11 attack errors did the Terps in as Michigan only need eight kills to win the set, 25-18. The Wolverines went on a 6-0 run to get separation with the set tied at 12. The Terps got it within three at two different occasions, but Michigan ended up winning the set.
Down 17-11 in the third set, Maryland made a run at it, curring it to 22-20 with a Schriner block and then even closer after a Twilley kill to make it a one point game. Michigan won the last two points of the set to take it and earn a 2-1 lead in the match. Maryland once again outblocked Michigan by three, this time 3-0, and Twilley and Pritchard combined for 11 kills.
Michigan won 12 of the last 16 points to take the fourth set and the match. The Terps hit below .100 for the second time in the match while Myers posted two blocks.
Next weekend, Maryland will travel to the Hoosier state to take on No. 17 Purdue on Friday, October 19 and Indiana on September, October 21. The match against Purdue will air on the Big Ten Network.
