COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The second-seeded Maryland field hockey team (21-2) beat No. 5 Connecticut, 2-1, in an overtime thriller Sunday afternoon to advance to the NCAA Final Four next weekend in Louisville.
Sophomore Hannah Bond made a game-saving defensive save three minutes into the overtime, then junior Madison Maguire scored the game-winner with 3:03 left in overtime to send Maryland to its 19th Final Four and second straight.
"I'm so happy for our team and our staff to be going back to another Final Four," head coach Missy Meharg said. "It's been awhile since we've been to back to back Final Fours, so this is a great progression for us. UConn is just so well-coached by Nancy Stevens and her staff. It's a shame both these teams aren't going to Louisville. I commend my team. We played with real fight and vigilance and Hannah Bond making that goal line save in overtime really saved the opportunity for us."
The Huskies (19-4) struck first when Abby Gooderham scored in the 24th minute off a penalty corner.
Maryland answered two minutes later when freshman Bibi Donraadt deflected in a long hit into the circle from sophomore Bodil Keus. Donraadt deflected in the shot from the near post.
The two teams stayed tied through halftime and the next 41:57 of play. Maryland senior goalkeeper Sarah Holliday made four saves in the second period to preserve the tie.
Connecticut had a chance for a goal in the 73rd minute when the Huskies' Cecile Pieper cracked a shot and it bounced behind Holliday. Bond dove head first into the goal cage to save the shot from crossing the goal line.
Four minutes later, Maguire took the ball into the circle and cracked a shot from the left side. It banged in for the win and Maryland advanced to its 18th Final Four under Meharg.
The Terrapins will take on third-seeded Princeton (15-4) in the NCAA Semifinals Friday at 3:45 p.m. at Louisville's Trager Stadium. Top-seeded North Carolina will play Wake Forest in the first Semifinal at 1 p.m.
