Maryland-Mt. St. Mary's Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Mark Turgeon
Opening statement:
"I was really pleased with a lot of phases of the game tonight. I thought for the first 30 minutes we were really good. We were able to try a lot of different things. It's the first time we've seen man-to-man in a while so we struggled against that a bit at times. But, we shot over 60 percent. We had 23 assists. Only things I'm disappointed about are two things: turnovers and the way we finished the game. That was really disappointing. I tried to give guys minutes and I think [Mount St. Mary's] scored 90 percent of the time in the last 10 minutes of the game. 20 years ago I would have lost my mind but the core guys were really good tonight. I don't judge it on our opponent, what the score is or who we're playing. I judge it on my guys and my guys were good for the first 30 minutes."

On the play of Serrel Smith:
"He was good on both ends. The first few rotations he was good defensively. We've been working hard on shooting. You can tell we're shooting the ball better – except from the foul line. It shows and it was good for him. He had the two three-pointers, he got the back door cut and got a layup, but I thought he defended well, too. Really, that's important – to stay on the floor and that he guards and we can trust him on the defensive end. I think he ended up with 12…13. He had another three-pointer in the second. I'm happy for him and it gives us another dynamic. When Aaron [Wiggins] – because Aaron can get hot. He had a little stretch there where he made a few. It was good to see. I'm happy for him because he's a great kid who works hard."

On Jalen Smith:
"Jalen's trying to please me but he wasn't ready to play…He threw the ball right to them in the back court and gave up a three. He just wasn't ready to play. But then, after that, he was pretty darn good. I think he had a double-double. Our length obviously is pretty nice. I think Jalen's getting a little more comfortable every game. He still doesn't know exactly where to go all the time which is understandable since he's learning two positions. And we've seen so much zone and now they're running back to man. We've been practicing a lot of man offense and I think it showed. I think he's getting more comfortable and he's a terrific player."

On how Serrel Smith changes the dynamic of the team when he's playing well:
"He just makes us deeper. We were on our way to 100 points and then we just stopped playing. I think it just shows you how we're much more explosive when he's playing that way. It makes us deeper and takes pressure off other guys. I think everybody relaxes a little bit more. We had five guys in double-figures – I think we had six in double-figures last game. And he's capable of being the seventh guy because of the way we share the ball – 23 assists. It helps and I think he's getting confidence. It was good for him to make one. That's why you play these games – to get better and for guys to get more comfortable."

On how he feels about playing inside-out offensively:
"It's pretty obvious that it's a strength of ours. We had 30 points in the paint in the first half and they zoned most of the half. We had 51 paint touches against Hofstra. They zoned us the whole game. We're doing a lot of good things. For such a new team we're doing a lot of good things. We just haven't been able to do it for 40 minutes yet. Competition steps up in our next game so we have to play better for longer to be successful."

On the combination of Jalen Smith and Bruno Fernando inside:
"A lot of it was against the man. We've been working on it a few weeks ago. It's a weapon for us. Depending on how people are guarding us and they fronted the post and gave us a chance to run a high-low. Stix [Jalen Smith] is getting more comfortable making that pass there. Bruno's just so strong. He's so big and so strong. It's good to see and I think we had three guys with five assists or more. That's a good sign for our team."

On how his team responded to his timeout early in the second half:
"I didn't think we were ready. We made a bunch of mistakes. Box outs, transition, out-of-bounds the way we guarded one of their plays. We weren't dialed in so I called a timeout. I trust those guys. It's been our best lineup and so I just got on them a little bit about concentrating. At the first media they built it up to 22 so plus four. And then we wanted to get it to 30 at the next timeout and it was 29. I think our biggest lead was 32 and then we shut it off after that. The guys responded there which was good."

On what Bruno Fernando is doing differently than last season:
"He's playing at a better pace. He has a better feel so he's slowed down. He was always in fifth gear last year. Running over people and spinning when he caught it. Now he's under control and he's really worked at that. His hands have gotten better – he's catching everything. And then he's just recognizing situations better. I said after the last game that I don't know if there's a big guy in the country who has improved as much as he has in one year. Think about where he was last year at this time to where he is now. It's great to see. Defensively he's gotten better. He always figures out a way to get into foul trouble. He got a technical to do it tonight but I'm not worried about that. There's a lot of things we can do defensively that we're not doing right now that can help him stay out of foul trouble as we move forward."
