Throughout the 2018-19 season, umterps.com will run a Q&A series with members of the Maryland wrestling team and staff. Fans will get to know more about their background and wrestling history, as well as some fun facts they may not have known before. Next up: redshirt freshman Garrett Burnham!
On his redshirt season:
"My redshirt year started off a little rough because I was still getting adjusted to college wrestling. But, as the season went on, I started winning more matches and I was learning a lot. I started coming into the room more for extra help during the week and I definitely think I learned a lot throughout that whole process."
On what he learned about himself during his redshirt season:
"During the winter, the college wrestling season can really become a grind. More so than anything you go through in high school. I think as a person and as a wrestler I got mentally tougher from that stretch. It helped me a lot because in high school I would tend to overthink a lot and not trust myself as much as I should have. In college, it's a lot easier to just let it fly and wrestle."
On wrestling at the same school as his older brother, Brendan:
"It's pretty cool. It isn't anything I'm not used to since we shared a bedroom growing up. Obviously we were on the same team all the time so I'm used to being around him a lot. It's cool that now is sort of the same thing we had growing up. It feels like nothing has changed. And our mom and dad love that we're here together. It helps them out a lot. If we were at different schools they would have to go to two separate places for matches, so it helps them out a lot and they like it."
On coming to Maryland with high school teammate Hunter Baxter:
"In high school we wrestled together every single day. Now we're here and sometimes we have to try and stay away from each other because we've already had 10-plus years of wrestling together. But it's definitely still cool for us. We've roomed together the past two years and it really does help having someone like that here. If I ever get homesick I can spend time with Brendan and Hunter and it makes things easier."
On the differences between playing baseball and wrestling as a kid:
"In high school it was nice to have baseball. It was good to have some time off from wrestling and another sport to spend time working on. Obviously the two are pretty different, so I enjoyed the different types of work that each sport needed. I definitely do miss baseball, though."
On his goals for this season:
"Last year I spent a little time traveling with the guys wrestling in duals and I want to do more of that this year. I want to wrestle in as many varsity matches as I can and hopefully win some open tournaments after just placing in them last season."
Favorite food in College Park:
"Marathon Deli. They have this sauce that they put on everything and it's incredible."
Favorite sports movie:
"Friday Night Lights"
Hobbies outside of wrestling:
"I do a lot of fishing and golfing when I'm home."
Favorite musical artist:
"Lil Wayne"
