Terps Seal the Deal at Spire Invitational

Day 1 Recap

The Terps continued to build off of the momentum they started on day one of the Spire Division-I Invitational with continued success on the final day of competition.

Jewel Smith had a busy day balancing events on the field and on the track. Smith qualified for the finals of the 60m hurdles and placed 8th with a lifetime best time of 8.64 seconds. Between the trials and finals, Smith won the long jump competition with a leap of 5.88m (19'03.50”). Nadia Hackett ran 8.84 in the 60m hurdle prelims.

Sam Shoultz added to Terp victories with a win in the high jump competition. Shoultz jumped 2.16m (7'1”) for the win. In the men's long jump, Drew Alfano placed second with a mark of 6.59m.

The short sprints showcased the Terps speed with Xahria Santiago running 7.75, Dai'lyn Merriweather running 7.86, and Chandler Baxter crossing the line in 7.91.

Claudia Ababio continued to represent the group in the throws posting a sixth place finish with a throw of 14.57m in the shot put.

Kameron Jones set the tone in the 400m dash finishing in second with a time of 47.57. Senior, Alex Leto crossed the line first in his heat in a time of 48.53.

In the women's 400m, freshman Jai'lyn Merriweather set a new season best running 54.52 for the win. This moves Merriweather into number six all-time at Maryland. Cheyenne Jones stayed steady winning her heat with a time of 56.30.

In the men's 800m, TJ Bleichner ran 1:54.83 and Hazem Miawad ran his first race of the indoor season in 1:57.26. Christine Laurie ran 2:16.66 in the women's 800m with Obichi Onwukwe right behind in 2:16.93. Emily Bracher crossed the line in 2:17.64.

Dallyssa Huggins tied for the winning height in the high jump competition soaring over the bar at 5'8” (1.73m) for a season best. In the women's triple jump, Leah Blackall finished in fifth place jumping 11.72m. Breanna Coleman also had a good showing in this event with a sixth place finish (11.65m). In the men's triple jump competition, Carlos Vanzego finished third with a mark of 14.47m.

William Jones set a new season best in the mile with a time of 4:22.01. Paige Novak ran 5:26.21 in her heat of the mile.

Alexandra Lucki set a lifetime best in the mile and claimed the victory in this event. Lucki's time of 4:40.84 ranks number two all time at Maryland.

This was the final indoor tune up for the Terrapin squad as the women prepare for the Big Ten Indoor Championships back at the Spire Facility Feb. 23rd-24th.
