Maryland is 7-0 all-time vs. Minnesota and 2-0 at Williams Arena. The Terrapins won all three meetings last year. Brenda Frese was the head coach at Minnesota for the 2001-02 season. She led the Gophers to a record of 22-8 and an NCAA Tournament berth before being named AP National Coach of the Year.
Most recently, Maryland fell to Purdue, 75-65, Thursday night in College Park. Kaila Charles scored a team-high 14 points with eight rebounds, and Kristen Confroy and Eleanna Christinaki each scored 13 points. Stephanie Jones added 12 and Brianna Fraser chipped in 11 off the bench.
Christinaki was named to the Big Ten Player of the Week Honor Roll Monday for the second time this season. She averaged 14.5 points, 7.5 boards with five steals in two wins last week. Charles is one of 30 of the top players in the country, and just three sophomores, on the Citizen Naismith Watch List.
Seven Terps are scoring over 9.0 points per game - Kaila Charles (17.8), Eleanna Christinaki (13.8), Blair Watson (13.8), Stephanie Jones (11.5), Kristen Confroy (10.2), Brianna Fraser (10.1) and Ieshia Small (9.3).
The Terrapins are currently ranked No. 3 in the country in three-point field goal percentage (.406) and No. 5 in scoring margin (+20.3). Confroy is No. 3 in the country and leads the Big Ten in three-point FG percentage (.473). Kaila Charles is No. 8 in the league in scoring and rebounding and No. 5 in field goal percentage. Freshman Channise Lewis averages 5.2 assists, which is fourth in the Big Ten overall and No. 2 among freshmen around the country. She is second in the league in assist/turnover ratio (2.8).
Kaila Charles has scored in double figures in 24 of 26 games this season. Kristen Confroy has played in 109 straight games, dating back to February of her freshman year. With three three-pointers at Rutgers Feb. 11, Confroy became the second Terp to hit 200 career threes. She is tied for No. 2 in the Maryland record books in career three-point percentage (.408).
Defensively, the Terrapins have held four of the conference's top six scorers under their averages on the year and have yet to face off against the other two. Of the Terps' 11 conference teams faced, they've held eight teams under their season scoring averages.
After Sunday's matchup, Maryland will play at No. 23 Michigan (20-8, 9-6) Thursday at 6 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
