Wolverines Take Down Terps

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Michigan scored four runs in the first and did not relinquish its lead as the Wolverines defeated the Maryland baseball team, 10-4, at Ray Fisher Stadium Friday afternoon.

The Terrapins (16-18, 3-4 Big Ten) trailed throughout, only getting as close as 5-2 after the top half of the fifth. Maryland was without normal Friday starter Taylor Bloom after the senior was injured during warm ups.

Redshirt freshman Mike Vasturia pitched the first two frames and allowed five runs in his second career start. Maryland did get a solid performance from freshman lefty Grant Burleson, who tossed scoreless third and fourth.

Maryland got a pair of runs back in the fifth. Justin Morris singled with one out before Nick Dunn knocked him over to third with a single. Dunn ended up on second after the throw came in to third to try and get Morris. Both runners came in on a Marty Costes double to right field.

Michigan ultimately put the game away in the bottom half of the inning with three runs off Elliot Zoellner. Maryland's final two runs came on a Dunn two-run double in the seventh.

Redshirt freshman lefty Billy Phillips allowed just one run in two and a third innings of relief work.

Maryland is back in action on Saturday for game two of the three-game set with the Wolverines. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. and fans can listen to the action on the Maryland Baseball Network.
