Terps Drop Extra Inning Affair with Tribe

COLLEGE PARK, Md.--- The Maryland baseball team dropped (14-15, 2-1 Big Ten) its contest to William & Mary (11-18) in 11 innings on a rainy Tuesday evening at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium in College Park.

The Terrapins had multiple opportunities to end the game late, but were unable to capitalize. The Tribe scored three runs in the 11th to secure the win. Freshman RHP Mark DiLuia did not factor into the decision of the game after he went 6.0 innings allowing one run on four hits with one walk and six strikeouts.

After the Terrapins fell behind 1-0 in the first inning, junior Nick Dunn knotted up the game in the fifth inning when he drove in junior Taylor Wright after Wright led off the inning with a stand-up double.

In the sixth inning, centerfielder Zach Jancarski doubled, his seventh of the season, to get on base for the Terps. Later in the inning, William & Mary right-handed pitcher, Jamie Sara hit designated hitter Richie Schiekofer to load the bases but the Terps were unable to produce any runs.

The Tribe regained the lead in the seventh inning after shortstop Zach Pearson singled up the middle to bring in a run. In the bottom half of the frame, Nick Dunn, who ended the day 2-for-4 with two walks, led off the inning with a double to left field. Right fielder Marty Costes, who finished the day 2-for-3 with three walks, brought home Dunn to tie the game at two.

After a Tribe homer in the eighth, the Terps once again tied the game in the bottom of the eighth after a throwing error committed by William & Mary pitcher Charlie Fletcher allowed left fielder Will Watson to score  from first base. Later in the inning, the Terps loaded the bases, but again were unable to score.

In the top of the eleventh, Colin Lipke hit a go-ahead, two run single to put the Tribe up by two. The Tribe would add another run in the inning on a hit by pitch with the bases loaded.

The Terrapins resume play on Friday at 6:30 p.m., when they take on Illinois at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
