COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland softball head coach Julie Wright announced the addition of three transfer student-athletes to the program today in pitcher Victoria Galvan, outfielder Micaela Abbatine and pitcher Kiana Carr. All three will be immediately eligible for the Terps as the team begins its fall season.
"We are pleased to welcome these three outstanding women to our family," said Wright. "Their talent and leadership will help improve our depth and give us a veteran presence. We are thrilled to bring them to Maryland!"
Galvan joins the Terrapins after spending a season at South Carolina as a reserve pitcher/utility player. The Brielle, N.J. native had a highly productive prep career at Manasquan High School, where she was a four-year letter winner and a three-time All-Shore Conference honoree. She was named the Coast Star Player of the Year all four years and also gained MSG Varsity All-Group 2 in each year of her career. She holds her school record for both home runs and strikeouts and played travel ball with the PA Chaos.
Wright on Galvan: "Victoria is an incredible talent who will grow and develop into an amazing pitcher in our program."
Abbatine comes to Maryland after playing two seasons at North Carolina, where she saw action in 56 games as a freshman and sophomore. Abbatine appeared in 17 games this past year before suffering a season-ending injury. The Warwick, N.Y. native appeared in 49 games as a freshman, making 18 starts while hitting .204. She stole 10 bases in her first collegiate season, helping UNC break the single-season stolen base record in 2017.
Wright on Abbatine: "Micaela is a very athletic and strong player whose skill set will translate well in the B1G."
Carr joins the Terps after a two-year stint at Phoenix Community College in Phoenix, Arizona where she went 37-2 from the circle in 267.4 innings for the Bears. Karr was a workhorse for Phoenix College this past year, leading the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference (ACCAC) in strikeouts (246) and wins (32) while ranking second in earned run average (2.08). She was named the ACCAC Pitcher of the Year and a First-Team All-Conference selection, while helping the Bears to a 2018 Region I Championship and ACCAC Title.
Wright on Carr: "Kiana is a proven winner who has pitched in championship games and has a championship mindset."
