COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland women's tennis team will begin its 2018-19 campaign with a pair of tournaments this weekend, including a trip to the inaugural ITA Hall of Fame Classic.
Along with the ITA's season-opening event, Maryland will also host the Bedford Cup at the Junior Tennis Champions Center in College Park.
The Terps will send Eva Alexandrova, Millie Stretton, Amber Policare and Saya Usui to Williamsburg, Va., where they will join players from top-10 squads such as North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Georgia. The event will feature seven teams who finished last season ranked inside the ITA Top 50.
Players and coaches participating in the event will also be able to attend the ITA Women's Tennis College Hall of Fame Ceremony on Saturday night.
Maryland's Anastasiia Gevel, Zoe Kulkarni, and Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka will represent the Terrapins in the Bedford Cup.
The Terps return an experienced roster for the upcoming season after losing just one player to graduation in 2018. Maryland's top doubles duo of Eva Alexandrova and Millie Stretton are primed for a strong season after capping their 2017-18 campaign with a win over the fourth-ranked doubles tandem in the country.
Maryland also returns sophomore Zoe Kulkarni, who anchored Maryland's singles lineup with 10 wins in her freshman campaign.
Head coach Daria Panova also added Kansas transfer Amber Policare to the roster for the upcoming season. Policare comes to Maryland after spending two seasons with the Jayhawks, who finished the 2017-18 campaign ranked 18th in the country.
Policare spent most of the season playing in the second doubles position, where she picked up eight victories. Her final match of the season ended in an upset victory over No. 76 Lavashova/Milovanovic of Pepperdine in the NCAA Championships.
