COLLEGE PARK, Md. – In front of a packed XFINITY Center Pavilion, the Maryland volleyball team won a five set classic over Ohio State, 3-2, on Saturday night.
The Terps won the first two sets, both by the score of 25-22, before dropping the third and fourth. In a seesaw fifth set, Maryland came out on top, with senior outside hitter
Liz Twilley notching the clinching kill as the Terps took the fifth 17-15.
"I'm really excited for our team and the players for finding a way to win that fifth set," said head coach
Adam Hughes. "It was a gritty win. This group never quits and I've known that since day one. I'm incredibly proud of them."
Maryland had a great night from the service line, posting 14 aces, the program's most since November 25, 2015 vs. Iowa where Maryland had 14. The Big Ten's leader in service aces, redshirt sophomore middle blocker

Samantha Burgio totaled three.

Rainelle Jones sparked the Maryland defense tonight as the Terps tied a season-high with 12 team blocks. Jones had a career-best eight herself while fellow freshman outside hitter

Erika Pritchard each had four. Pritchard led the Terps with 14 kills and seven digs. Freshman libero
Allegra Rivas had 24 digs and sophomore setter
Nicole Alford had 35 assists.
With the match tied 2-2, Maryland started the fifth set fast, winning six of the first seven points. Snyder sparked the start with two service aces right off the bat before kills from Twilley and Pritchard gave Maryland a hefty lead. Ohio State came right back, winning nine of the next 11 points to take a 10-8 lead. As they did all night, the Terps battled back, fighting to cut the Buckeye lead to one at 13-12. Down one, Jones and Twilley combined for a block to tie it up at 13. Maryland had match points at 14-13 and 15-14 before finally sealing the deal at 16-15 with the Twilley kill.
The Terps won the first two sets both by the score of 25-22. Maryland hit a match high .381 in the first set led by a hot start from Schriner who had four kills at a .429 hitting percentage. Schriner continued to excel in the second set, hitting .571 with another four kills. Maryland had four team blocks in the second set led by two from Myers. Down as many as seven at 15-8, the Terps went on a 12-5 run to tie it up at 20 and finished the set strong winning five of the last seven points.
Ohio State won the third and fourth set to tie the match up and force the decisive fifth that the Terps took 17-15.
Now 11-5 and 2-2 in Big Ten play, Maryland will travel for a two-day trip to No. 9 Penn State and Rutgers next weekend, playing Penn State on Friday, October 5 and Rutgers on Saturday, October 6.
