GymTerps Open Season with a Win

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland gymnastics team opened the 2019 season with a home victory on Sunday over Cortland, Penn and West Chester. The Terrapins notched a team score of 193.850. Junior Kirsten Peterman led the Terps with an all-around score of 38.500  The Terps showcased two all-around competitors in Peterman and sophomore Audrey Barber

Both freshmen Sanya Glauber, and Alexsis Rubio competed in the first collegiate events of their career with Rubio as the anchor on vault and Glauber posting an 9.850 on bars.

"I was really impressed," said head coach Brett Nelligan. "I thought Lex and Sanya really handled themselves well for freshmen. For their first time out in the big arena under the lights they were extraordinary."

The Terps began the meet on vault where they earned a score of 48.675. Sophomore Collea Burgess led the way on vault for the meet with a 9.775. Rubio anchored the event in her first outing as a Terrapin and posted an impressive 9.750.

"I think I had a pretty good start for my first meet," said Burgess. "Having the team behind me, pushing me in the gym and rooting for me just really helped."

The GymTerps strongest rotation came on bars with four gymnasts scored a 9.800 or higher. Sophomore Emilie LeBlanc led the Terps off with a 9.875 and was matched by junior Alecia Farina. Junior transfer Tiara Wright also had an impressive showing on bars with a 9.800.

"Tiara hasn't competed in two years, so for her come out and put up a big bar routine in that third spot, I was really pleased with that," said Nelligan.

Sophomores Collea Burgess and Sabriyya Rouse led the way for the Terps on beam, each with a 9.725. The Terrapins closed out the meet on floor led by Farina with a 9.750.

Maryland jumps into Big Ten competition next weekend when they head to the University of Illinois on Saturday, January 19th. The meet begins at 3 p.m., will be available on BTN2GO for fans to follow the Terps.
