Field Hockey Announces Incoming Class

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The highly-successful Maryland field hockey program will welcome six top players this year as part of Maryland's class of 2019. Isabella Bressler (Leesport, Pa.), Christina Calandra (Manchester, Mass.), Emma DeBerdine (Millersville, Pa), Maddie Gaughan (Hummelstown, Pa.), Megan Munley (Arnold, Md.) and Sam Zywna (Virginia Beach, Va.) signed on to enroll in the University of Maryland in the fall of 2019, head coach Missy Meharg and her staff announced this week.

About Bressler: Scored 72 goals with 39 assists for 183 points in junior and senior seasons…named First Team All-State in 2017 and 2018, as well as Division 2 MVP and earned All-County honors…named Team MVP in 2017 and earned Second Team All-Region honors…X-Calibur Club team won its pools in four years at Festival, six years at the National Indoor Tournament, and Shooting Stars in 2916...team finished second at the Club Championships in 2018 and third in 2017…an NFC selection in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and a Stars & Stripes and Junior National Camp selection in 2017 and 2018…on the U.S. Under-17 Team the last two years and toured Uruguay In 2018…aunts Molly Kauffman Periandi and Kate Kauffman Beach played at Maryland in the 1990s.
 
Meharg on Bressler: "The legacy continues through the generations. Belle, like her aunts adores the game, loves the Terps and has unlimited potential at both Maryland and in the FIH arena. Her quick hand speed makes her most dangerous in counter attack and goal scoring."
 
Bressler on Maryland: "I have grown up in a Terp family. Hearing about my two aunts' experiences playing field hockey at Maryland inspired me to want to go to Maryland. I chose Maryland for the atmosphere, coaching staff, field hockey program, and great academic opportunities. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to play field hockey at my dream school."

About Calandra: Four-year letterwinner in field hockey, two years in lacrosse and two in indoor track at Manchester Essex Regional…carried a career save percentage of .895 with 49 career shutouts and 239 career saves…team won the Cape Ann League title all four years of her career and finished second in the N. D11 Tournament three times…team went 70-3-8 over her career…named 2018 Cape Ann Player of the Year…named a First Team Cape Ann League All-Star twice and the Crown Trophy Athlete of the Month in 2017…named the 2017  Gloucester Daily Times Female Fall Sports All-Star…named an All-Scholastic Athlete by both the Boston Globe and the Boston Herald…named to the 2018 Senior Best of 60 Game…served as team captain in junior and senior years…played on 2018 Northeast Regional Team at Futures…played for United Club team…named to U-19 Premier Team three times and the Elite Team in 2018…Regional Club Championship team member in all four years…team finished second in 2018 and fifth in 2015…team advanced to the 2018 National Club championship…played defense in lacrosse for two seasons…competed in shotput and 50-yard sprint in indoor track.

Calandra on Maryland: "I chose the University of Maryland because they have an amazing campus, one of the best team environments I've ever seen, and a coaching staff that is experienced and makes you feel at home. It didn't take long for me to make my decision to attend Maryland because I could see myself growing athletically and academically over the next four years.  I look forward to being a part of the Terrapin family and welcoming future athletes with the same hospitality I received."

About DeBerdine: Four-year letterwinner in field hockey at Penn Manor…led team to 28-0 and state championship season in 2017…named NFHCA and Max Field Hockey National Player of the Year in 2017…named an All-State selection and an NFHCA All-Region selection in sophomore, junior and senior seasons...earned NFHCA All-America honors in 2017…named to the Lancaster Lebanon All-League Team in all four years…named to U.S. Under-17 and Under-19 teams…club ABC Hockey team won 2016 national title.

About Gaughan: Earned four varsity letters at Lower Dauphin…team went to state semifinal twice, finished second in the district in 2017…in senior season, team won the district and was a state finalist… named to First Team Mid-Penn conference in 2017 and 2018…named Second Team All-State in 2017…in 2018, named Mid Penn Player to Watch and earned State Honorable Mention…served as senior captain…three-time Keystone State Game champion and 2016 MVP…played for Nook Hockey club…team won National Club and Regional Club championship in 2017…team won 2016 and 2017 Festival and won its pool three times in the National Indoor Tournament.
 
Meharg on Gaughan: "Maddie brings hockey smartness and discipline to our squad. As a four-year member of Linda Kriesers' Lower Dauphin High School team, we know how deep-rooted her fundamental skills and tactical awareness are. We envision Maddie developing into a fast-paced transitional midfielder."

About Munley: Played four years at Broadneck…scored 24 goals with 25 assists over her career…named First Team All-County and First Team All-State in 2017 and 2018 and to the Second Team of both in 2016…in 2017, named to the NFHCA Academic Squad, the NFCHA and Max Preps Mid-Atlantic Regional Player, earned First Team All-Met honors…earned First Team Capital Gazette honors in 2017 and 2018…was Co-Offensive Player of the Year …named Most Improved Player and Freshman Starter in 2015…played for the Spark Field Hockey Club.
 
Meharg on Munley: "Our Annapolis born and bred student-athlete. As a grey shirt, Megan gets a jump on the year - academically, socially and with hockey as she enrolls full-time this month. Megan has an exciting future as a Terp.  She has huge grit and desire coupled with the technical ability to play on all lines of the field."
 
Munley on Maryland: "Maryland has been an integral part of my childhood as my dad is an alum. I've toured many campuses as college field hockey didn't come into the picture until my mid-teens. No campus gave me the home feel like Maryland did. Being a Terp means having utmost respect to those around you creating a healthy environment. I have valued this greatly and couldn't be happier with my decision to be a Terp."
