ANN ARBOR, Mich. -Â The second-ranked Maryland field hockey team (13-2, 5-1 B1G) dropped a tight conference match to No. 9 Michigan, 1-0, Friday night at the Wolverines' Ocker Field in Ann Arbor.
Â
The Terrapins outshot the Wolverines, 10-5, and took six shots in the second half as they tried to score the equalizer.
"Michigan was so aggressive," head coach
Missy Meharg said. "We found our flow on numerous occasions to put ourselves in position to score. They wanted it more. They showed relentless effort for 50-50 balls. Maryland was in a position a few times, but not enough. We learned to be resilient every second you have to compete."
Â
Michigan (11-3, 4-1) scored the game's lone goal with 1:03 left in the second quarter. Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort tipped in the shot from the left baseline.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Noelle Frost made three saves on Michigan's five shots.
Â
The loss ended Maryland's 10-game win streak. Heading into Friday's match, the Terrapins had picked up three consecutive shutouts.
After Friday's contest, Maryland will play at No. 21 Ohio State (6-6, 1-3) Sunday at noon in Columbus, Ohio. The Terps-Buckeyes game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.
