COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Oct. 27, 2019) -- The seventh-ranked Maryland men's basketball team held an open practice Sunday afternoon at XFINITY Center, providing fans with an inside look into the upcoming season.
The team began practice with various offensive and shooting drills and ended with a full-court scrimmage. Head coach Mark Turgeon was mic'd up, engaging with fans and his team throughout the event.
Following practice, Coach Turgeon and the team answered questions and signed autographs for fans.
"It was nice to see the team practice outside of a game situation. I like how Coach Turgeon was praiseworthy yet critical at the same time. He never stops coaching those fundamentals," said Pat and Becky Leonard, Terp fans from Bowie."
Sophomore guard Aaron Wiggins impressed throughout the practice and is looking forward to his second year on the team.
"I think the sophomores are a little bit more confident and comfortable in the atmosphere as well as in the style of play," Wiggins said. "Coming into this year all of us have different roles. We're not the new guys, we're more comfortable and more calm."
The open practice is in advance of a highly anticipated season as the Terrapins are ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press preseason poll. Coach Turgeon is eager for the season to begin and feels good about his team.
"I think today is about the younger kids, it's a good time for them," Turgeon said. "I think for us whenever you can get a team in front of people it helps, and so we will be better Friday because of what we did today. It was a good day, we had a good turnout."
Maryland will host Fayetteville State in an exhibition game on Friday, Nov. 1 at 7:30 p.m. and will officially open the new season on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with a home matchup against Holy Cross at 7:30 p.m.
