COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland football team will play its second consecutive ranked opponent on Saturday when it welcomes No. 14 Michigan to Maryland Stadium for the Terps annual Homecoming game. The contest is set for a noon kick and will be broadcast on ABC and the Maryland Sports Radio Network.
THIS WEEKEND'S STORYLINES
1. Maryland has forced a turnover in 20 straight contests, the longest current streak in the nation. The Terps, who have notched a takeaway in every game over the past two seasons continued the streak last week at #17 Minnesota when CB Marcus Lewis picked off the Gophers and returned it 40 yards. The Terps have forced 12 turnovers and only lost 11, a plus-one margin this season, recording seven interceptions and five fumbles. The 20 game takeaway streak is the second longest in program history, trailing only the 26 game streak that took place from November 6, 1999 to the end of the 2001 season.
2. With a WR DJ Turner 40-yard punt return touchdown in Week One vs. Howard and a RB Javon Leake 100-yard kickoff return touchdown in Week Six at Rutgers, Maryland is one of only two power five teams (UCLA) with both a kickoff and punt return touchdown this season. Maryland leads the Big Ten in punt return average (15.14) and is fourth in kick return average (22.84). Leake now has 1,115 kickoff return yards in his career, good for eighth-best in program history, just 79 yards behind Ty Johnson ('18).
3. Maryland RBs Javon Leake and Anthony McFarland Jr. both have seven rushing touchdowns this season, good for the 33rd highest total in the country and makes the Terps one of only three teams in the country (Central Michigan & Louisiana) and the only power five team to have two running backs with seven TDs this season. It is the first time the Terps have had a RB pair both have seven touchdowns in a season since Keon Lattimore had 13 and Lance Ball had 12 in 2007.
4. The Terps have been explosive on offense this season, tallying 12 rushes of over 30 yards, tied for the eighth highest total in the country and second most in the Big Ten. In addition, five of those 12 explosive plays have gone for 50-plus yards, the third-most in the nation, trailing only Ohio State. Maryland has scored on five of these big play rushes, three from RB Javon Leake (64 vs. Syracuse, 42 at Rutgers & 60 vs. Indiana), one from RB Anthony McFarland Jr. (80 at Rutgers ) and one from QB Tyrrell Pigrome (61 at Purdue).
5. Senior S Antoine Brooks Jr. has totaled 47 solo tackles this year, the most per game in the Big Ten and the 12th highest total in the country. Brooks has led Maryland in tackles in three of the eight games and tallied a career-best 13, all solo, at Temple (9/14). Last week at Minnesota, Brooks tallied seven tackles (five solo), second on the team.
6. Maryland has won 63-percent of its homecoming games all-time, a 58-34-4 record. The Terps have won each of the past three years on homecoming, defeating Purdue in 2016, Indiana in 2017 and Rutgers in 2018 and holds a 5-4 record this decade. Michigan will be the 28th different opponent Maryland will welcome on its homecoming.
