COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Maryland scored a season-high six points – the most ever by a Terrapin team in Big Ten play – as the Terps cruised to a 6-2 rout over Illinois Sunday afternoon.
Five different Terps recorded a point, led by a three-point performance from Loren Sefcik (1 G, 2 A) and a pair of two-goal days from Adalee Broadbent and Alyssa Poarch.
The win moves Maryland to 7-4-2 overall and 3-2 in Big Ten play, while Illinois drops to 7-5 (1-4).
Maryland got to work early on an overcast day at Ludwig Field, as Anissa Mose tallied her first goal of the season off a corner kick. Poarch was next to deliver, as Sefcik found her on the right wing in the 15th minute. The Middletown, Del. took the space in front of her outside the 18 and blasted a shot into the back left corner to make it 2-0 Terps.
After an Illini goal in 35th minute, the Terps fired right back three minutes later as Jlon Flippens found Broadbent inside the six-yard box for her first career collegiate goal. Broadbent notched another before half for the Terps, as Mose played a perfect corner to find the Lancaster, Pa. native for a header and a 4-1 edge at the break.
Poarch and Sefcik added insurance for the Terps in the second half, pushing the lead to 6-1 before a late Illini score made it a 6-2 final.
Maryland returns to action on Friday, October 11 to face Nebraska on the road in Lincoln.
Notes
The six goals were the most scored in a game by Maryland since a 9-0 win over the Citadel on August 23, 2013.
