#8 Maryland Uses Fourth Quarter Comeback to Top JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The eighth-ranked Maryland women's basketball team (2-1) took control in the fourth quarter to top James Madison, 70-68, Wednesday night at the Dukes' Convocation Center.

Sophomore Shakira Austin led the way with a career-high 21 points. She scored 13 points in the final period off 6-for-6 shooting. Maryland trailed by as much as 19 at 60-41 to start the fourth quarter, then outscored James Madison (2-1) 29-11 over the final 10 minutes.

"Just extremely proud of our poise in a really difficult game," head coach Brenda Frese said. "I thought JMU was sensational. They came out clicking on all cylinders. For us, just uncharacteristic, out of rhythm, first time on the road, as we're still trying to find our chemistry. But proud of the fourth quarter. When we put our heads down, we brought a lot more energy on the defensive end. I thought Shakira was huge for us in the fourth quarter when you talk about the presence she had and the team in general to make the plays we did to get it back. Just an opportunity for us to grow and be able to beat a really good, a really experienced team and move on and learn from it."

A layup by Austin with 4:03 to play cut the Dukes' lead to 66-56 and jumpstarted a 14-2 Maryland run over the final minutes. Stephanie Jones pitched in four points in the run, then a three by sophomore Taylor Mikesell with 2:04 left tied the game at 66.

Austin gave Maryland its first lead at 68-66 with a jumper with 1:20 to play. She fouled out with 14 seconds left, then JMU's Lexie Barrier tied the game once more with a pair of free throws.

Freshman Ashley Owusu drove for the game-winning layup with three seconds to play. She finished with 14 points.

Mikesell pitched in 10 points for the Terps, Jones had nine and Kaila Charles had eight with a game-high 10 boards.

To start, James Madison jumped out to a 9-1 lead as the Terrapins struggled to score early. The Dukes shot 46 percent from the floor to take a 34-27 lead into halftime. JMU continued to push in the third period, winning the quarter 23-14.

Maryland won the battle in the paint, 30-18 and outrebounded James Madison, 44-38.
